New guy looking for a toolbox....

hi tool guru's. I'm new the this site but not new to the automotive scene....

Im a GM Tech and i've outgrown my 26" craftsman box, plus my matco HD service cart is full....within the next 6 months or so ill be looking for a box....

a buddy of mine just bought a snap on 54" double roller that is nice, but i just want a bit more, but i dont care for a triple bay.

anyone used the matco 6s w/ their top hutch that has 1/3 drawers, and 2/3 open space?

I'll be financing the box (probably with my bank so i dont pay the 19% SO/MATCO wants). I want to stay in the 8000 range...which should be roughly about 300/month.

anyone have any suggestions for a first time buyer? We have a snapon and matco dealer local so it will be one of those two...

My advice, buy a used inexpensive one. Don't go into debt. You'll regret it down the road. It's only new the day you get it, it is used after that! Let people judge you by your skills, not your toolbox.

That top box/hutch is pretty cool isn't it? Where are you from? Good deals can be had on used boxes if you shop around.

I know you said you were not into the triple bank. But i just got one of these and it is a perfect size, there is also lots of ways to expand later if you need more room. Just don't get your self trapped with a small box so in 3-4 years its to small again you have to get a hole other box.

As for my reasoning, People who get there Vehicles worked on, if you are into that kind of work were you are in the "fish bowl" and people watch you, you don't make a first impression out of what you look like. They look at your tool box, Its sad but true only when people get to know you do they trust you for you're work.

I'd keep my eyes open for a nice used box. Pay $3000 for a used one and put the $5000 savings in a Roth IRA, invested in a stock fund. Assuming a conservative and less than historical return of 9% for the S&P 500 you will have $39K in 30 years.

im not too concerned about going into debt, aside from our truck this will be the only debt we have. I'm getting married in april, once i get married, i get to buy a new box lol...a little deal we made AFTER the engagement

im not opposed to a used box, but i havent seen one that had everything i want, including being yellow. whatever it is, it has to be yellow...

and aside from that it will be easier to order one, and have it ready after the wedding

for someone who is a GM tech, do you really need an 8000 dollar toolbox that if god forbid you ever lost your job wouldn't be worth 8000 to anyone else? IMO..the HF 44" top and bottom is the best for the money...especially for someone just starting out

we actually will be losing gm in october, being a single franchise dealer (buick only), this wont hurt us at all. we make most of our money selling and fixing used cars anyway, although the warranty work loss will ****....

im in a good position with the shop, and my job isn't in danger...aside from that; ill have my own shop in the next year or two....

Buy a macsimizer 1350 the biggest double bay box around, only 5 inches shorter than snap on's triple bay. you can find them used for less than 3000. Mine kicks ***, but I do have to give props to snap on for finally making a "double bay" out of their triple bay size platform, I would trade up to that.

I picked up a used Cornwell for 5 bills. Had a choice of that and a Mac for the same price. Shop CL and Kijiji and save big!

I know you have your heart set on yellow, but a red or black or purple box will also securely hold your tools. My advice: buy a good used box now for cheap, then go whole hog on a shiny yellow one in a few years (when you simply want it, not because you need it).

Another thought: You can always have a non-yellow one painted. Make a used box look totally new and still save thousands.

If think the Snap-On 40" box is going to be enough and its in good condition
go for it.
But then the Extreme Tools Tool Box is 56" wide, more space. They always get good reviews. Either one is a good choice.

if you could go into the 2k range im sure you can get something thats more than 20" deep....

but the extreme tools unit looks nice....dont forget it says there are some imperfections in the clear coat tho

I think it is good advice to buy a good used box and save some money. But, if you're dying to get a new box, the Snap-on dealer show is sometime in July. My SO dealer always buys boxes at the show and makes a pretty good deal on them. I bought a $2300KRA roll cab for $1500, financed it through SO credit and received another $100 off. Then just paid the thing off the next month. Talk to your SO guy before he leaves.
