New Guy with Garage Under Construction

Hi my name is Dave and I'm a Garage Junkie! Wow, that feels better!

Glad I found this site!!! Have been lurking for awhile, but couldn't stand not seeing all the great pics so I finally joined. I have gained alot of valuable info over the past few weeks.

I am in the "finishing stages" of my modest workshop. Do we ever get them 100% complete? I hired the floor poured, but everything else was done by myself with help and guidance from my Father-in-Law. It is a basic 24x30 built on a limited budget. The only thing different about it and "regular" garages in the area is the 2x6 framing with the extra insulation in the walls and ceiling. I wanted something that would require minimal heat to maintain inside temp of 50 degrees here in Indiana. I have attached a couple workbench pictures. Sorry no outside pics. Please remember, still a work in progress.

Hey a "real world" garage, nice for a change. Like that you used OSB on the walls, I know some other people that have done that also. One heck of a lot more durable then drywall. Feels good to build it yourself doesn't it. Anyway nice job. Welcome to the "hood"

I still like to drool over the shops that are a bit out of my league.

The walls still need some type of finish and then I can trim out. I wanted to stain/paint the OSB as I installed it, however my wife thought that it should be left natural or maybe with a clear poly. The vote is still out. My original intention was to NOT move in until I had it completed, but I couldn't wait. Does anyone have any opinions or experience on which type of finish for the ceiling and walls would be best?

lookin good! I used OSB in my garage as well. I am glad I did.. I had Drywall in my old garage and didnt like it! Here is a pic of the OSB, I painted mine...(2 coats)

Nice place! I too, am glad to see another "real world" garage showcased here. Just my 2 cents- the walls might be easier to keep clean if you paint them! A white color will help brighten things up too.

Very nice! I used drywall and it hasn't been a problem. I think the semi gloss paint helps it's durability. I would paint it white, maybe use KILZ so the OSB doesn't bleed.

Where I live the zoning laws require any attatched structure be finished with 5/8" fire proof sheet rock (to prevent or slow a fire from spreading into the house). When I added my shop to my house there was only a 6 foot common wall between the house and the shop (the entry) but I was required to use it through out the entire structure. With a 13' tall peak it was quite heavy especially since I used 12 footers! I wanted to be able to attatch anything to the walls in any location so I finshed the the walls in 3/8" plywood and then covered it with the 5/8" sheetrock. A bit of overkill but that is the way I do things!

Looking good!
Even though it took me about a month of weekends, I am really glad I painted my wood walls. It really brightened everything.
I primed thoroughly with Kilz, then two coats of a toned down white semi-gloss.
If you can paint the ceiling that helps too.

Since KILZ has been mentioned a couple of times, I'll include that Lowe's carries a oil-based primer similar to KILZ that is MUCH less expensive. I applied it to my OSB walls with a thick nap roller and it covered in one coat. I can't imagine it going on any better than what it did. I was quite happy with it.

Just built one myself sheet rock on the celing and OSB walls yes do use the Kils primer on the OSB first then paint or the glue will bleed into the paint big time .Still cant decide what colour for the lower half of my walls for the two tone paint scheme the celing and upper half is already semi gloss white plan on finish painting this week end and post pictures then.

That sounds like a good size shop. Nice bench too - looks god and sturdy! I'm doing the same OSB on my walls, I'll just be rolling them an d the ceiling with white primer as a finish.
