Hey all, Josh here (aka Roostabunny on my Suzuki GS and Land Cruiser forums).
I'm a long time handy-guy, grew up watching and helping my Dad fix and build stuff, managed a non-profit conference center property for a few years (which meant fixing everything from leaky boats to leaky pipes and cement mixers to floor standing pastry mixers). I don't like to buy vehicles I can't work on myself, so I drive a 26-year-old Toyota and (once I finish rebuilding the top end) a 36-year-old Suzuki GS.
Bought our first house a couple of years ago, and what a relief to have a garage. Changing the timing belt in my wife's Honda Pilot in the apartment parking lot was a little sketchy at a couple of points. Also, it helps that my wife is also a creator/builder, and doesn't consider it a priority to park in the garage.
My main garage activities are fixing and upgrading family vehicles and small engine equipment, general home repair, and building functional (and very occasionally good looking) things out of wood and other materials. My wife and I both enjoy "upcycling" (scavenging, salvage, trash picked treasures... call it what you will). I've dabbled in knife making and leather work, but I don't see building a forge or stitching pony soon. I'm also a recovering perfectionist, who has to constantly dial it back to get anything done at all. One day at a time, as we say.
I get considerable function out of my attached 2-car garage space with a few tools and piecemeal work surfaces, but I've been ruminating on a redesign. I feel like I'm always searching for tools or cleaning for space to work, and I have a vision that's tons more work-friendly than the current layout and the janky sheet metal bench and built-in shelves that came with the house.
Practical stuff aside, I hope it's not too old school to say that a man needs a space - and after a lot of years having "my" space contain a commode, it's been therapeutic just to have a garage at all. No joke. Plus I'm a keyboard jocky (project manager) by day and I'm 3 years and 2 months from having two teenage daughters. So, like I said... space.
After years of researching builds and fixes on the internet, this forum seems like the absolute best place I've found to share ideas and experience and get feedback on both my space and the random junk that I work on there.
Also, I'm long winded. You've been warned.
Thanks in advance!
