Hello y'all. As you can probably guess my name is Bill and I have come to find that forums such as this are very helpful in a myriad of subjects. I'm currently in the Army stationed at Ft. Hood, TX. I've been in for 10 years and have come to like the current area I live in so my wife and I have decided that even if we get moved away before I retire/get out, we will move back to our current home.

That being said, my two car attached garage has become less than usable due to the amount of stuff we have stored in it. We have decided that we (I) need to get some sort of storage/shop area for our stuff and my mechanical hobbies. I'm hoping to gain some valuable knowledge from this forum as I have from forums of other subjects. Thanks in advance for any input y'all send my way.

Bill: welcome and just a word or warning. you will find many many ideas for garage and storage shed builds. also shelving and other ideas. that warning is there is the right or better tool for almost every job so your tool collection will grow substantially.

if you are ok with that then come on it and ask plenty of questions on threads you enjoy and teach us what you know or learn.

also some threads are just there for a day or two and some have been around for years. pick the ones you like and stick around or just the ones you like to read and maybe make a comment works for most of us.

good luck with your plan

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan so I've got a lot of time on my hands to go through the wealth of knowledge and experience here.

Howdy Bill,

What are these "mechanical hobbies"?
I like ATV's, Snowmachines, street bikes. (Campers too, but less as my kids get older)

Hobbies are ATV's, my truck, wife's truck, etc. I'm a mechanic for the Army so I tend to tinker on lots of things.

I've spent a couple of summers in Central Texas so far and while it does get pretty toasty, it doesn't compare to 120*+ in the middle east with body armor on. AC would be a nice addition but I don't think I'm going to worry about it too much. I plan to put a window on every wall in order to facilitate cross winds to cool things down inside.
