Hey Gents, been lurking about for years reading the garage experience here. Very interesting. I am now embarking on a detached garage expansion and need some help/advise and thought I would join. This is my existing garage and I am proposing a punched out and up addition and need some help on joining the two.

I wish to put 10' walls on the addition and go 4 foot wider. So the gable will step up half way back. I want to have the adjoining walls open between the two and don't know how to draw it up for permits. Both are stud wall and raftered. Can anyone direct me to the info I need? Will I need a header? Will rafter ties be enough?
Original structure: 20x24
addition: 24x22

QB: first off if you are drawing up your own plans will the local building department accept them without the engineering company's stamp on them? can you go in your GJ profile and put in your location which might help answer some of the questions.

if you have the space i'd build a brand new bigger building and have your existing one as your area to park your daily drivers or turn into a living space or man cave, but i don't have all your details.

i'd also start a thread in garage gallery and ask questions so you'll get more member's eyes and thoughts cause this is the introduction area that not a lot of members know about or make time to check on.

cheers and good luck and welcome to the forum
