New Guys garage

First of all I'd like to say this is an awesome website! I've been lookin' around here for the last several weeks and I am very impressed with the garages I've seen here. I consider myself a garage nut like most of you. I thought I'd share my garage. My garage is 30 x 40. It has enough parking for 6 vehicles plus lawn equipment. Most of the time I only have 4 vehicles inside at one time. It is fully insulated,concrete floor is 4" with rebar ,moisture barrier and floor drains(front center bay is my wash bay)which connect and drain out the back of the garage foundation. I use 15 8' dual flourescent lights wired in 3 banks of 5 for lighting. The garage also has 6 standard light fixtures for regular lighting purposes. The garage has its own sub panel. I also have a 220 line which I use in the summer to power my airconditioner. Heating is supplied by a 75000 btu Modine cieling mounted natural gas unit. In the winter I keep the garage temp set to 50-55. If I'm going to work in the garage the heater raises the temp to 65 in about 15 minutes. When the garage/house was under construction,my Dad was having central air installed in his house. He gave me his old 18000 btu wall ac unit which is only several years old. I also have pull down stairs for my 8' x 40' attic storage area. The garage has wall mounted TV and scrub sink.
Future plans include a mid rise car lift,some more storage cabinets and getting my stereo and speakers wired up. I'd like to have the floor professionaly epoxy coated but the price ($2-3 a square foot) is not in the budget right now. The finance minister (wife) has not found this to be something I really 'need'.

That storage area is similar to what I did. A little hot up there, but it's nice to have that space. I'm sure you've already thought of this, but I'll mention it anyway. Those "W" brace pieces in the joists hold shelving quite nicely!

The shelving idea is a good one, just remember that trusses have limited load capabilities. You do not want to overload the shelves with heavy items as this may affect the truss.

Good point, I'll limit myself to just putting rear ends, transfer cases, bare engine blocks & extra step bumpers there...I'll save the heavy items down on the floor.

You may want to make another trap door to the attic storage space and put a hoist or winch up there so you can store things like the wheel barrow, etc.

I have ALL of my lawn care items up in my attic and pull them down as I need to use them. How many times a year will you use a wheel barrow and wouldn't it be nice to have that floor space the rest of the days that you won't use it??? Just a thought, and I picked up a hoist at HF for $12 that will lift just about anything that I can fit up there.

Dave,Did you get your floor done? My son used the ucoatit system,Pain to apply but it worked out real nice,36X40 was 1400.00 3 step coat,primer base shine,The only problem I can see is it snowed here and if you have some on your shoes, it could be a problem.We solved that by using a mat at the door.works for us.Talk to ya later Mr.L

Mr.L - No,I have not coated the floor. At this point,it looks doubtful that I'll get it done. 1 kid in college and another going this fall is killing my budget! Any extra money I get is going into my Corvette. If I had the dough I'd like to have it done professionally. BTW..yours looks great.
