hi all,
i heard of this site through www.corvetteforum.com some time ago and have kind of been lurking for a while.

my family plans to move to a piece of land we own, we figure we will need a garage of some sort. my dad wants to build a U.S. steel arch building, i feel that this type of building will bee too hot in 90+++ days, i want to build a pole barn type building. i saw ones a www.diypolebarns.com for similar price(would 84 lumber have a better price?)

so i pose to yall a question
what are the pros and cons of the two different building types?

I was considering the steel arch but it would not fit in the area I wanted to put it, I didn't want to look out of the house and look at the side of it. I also understand they are a pain in the a$$ to put up. They are also hard to insulate and finish the inside. The plus they have is the wind load the can withstand.
Do a search for quonset and steel arch and they have been covered here.

I orderd a post and beam barn from www.nationalbarn.com and it to be delivered in the next 2 weeks. Its 30x50x10 fully insulated including delivery and erection for $12600.00. This is just the building and does not cover land prep, concrete electric ect.... They build taller wall heights but this bulding fits my needs.
There are also many threads covering post and beam buildings here also.

Take your time and pick the one that fits what you need, there is a lot of good info here.

By the way I am on the www.corvetteforum.com in the C3 section.

The only experience I have is erecting a US-buildings-direct.com garage for my sister in law. I could see right away that there was NO way we were going to find two STRONG people to pull all those assembled sections up into place. I had her rent a lift platform that we used as a crane and put a person up there in the lift box to help bolt it together. Once they're preassembled, all it took was one eight hour day to erect and bolt into place. Of course there are the thousands of other bolts to put in later...

I only have experience with the pole type. My wife and I built this ourselves last year for 5K. It is 24X40.

I had initially intended on using half of it as a shop. I was going to pour a concrete floor, close it in, and insulate / drywall.

The problem I see with converting it to a garage is the movement of the structure due to the poles. As the posts dry they are twisting and cracking. It works well for what we use it for. The cattle have not complained :)
