Hi guys, my name is James and I'm from Western Mass. I've been lurking on the boards for a little and figured I should introduce myself. I'm friends with forum member Bull- he was the one who directed me to the site. I'm 17 and I want to go to college for marine engineering. I am currently interning at a truck center to learn more about diesel tech. I have a big interest in cars, especially Pontiacs, but anything with an engine is cool to me.

Yeah, I found this place when I was opening my shop and looking for some ideas. It's been a slippery slope ever since!

Hahaha There is nothing wrong with liking quality tools. Take care of them and they'll last a lifetime. Keep some cash set aside and watch craigslist and ebay. You'll find some good deals if you're willing to wait for them. a couple months ago I was browsing around CL and ran across an add for "Some Snap-On Tools" Emailed the guy, he was kind of a pain, young guy, was a diesel tech for 2 months then changed his mind. I picked up a set of Long SO drivers, a FL80 Ratchet, 10-19mm Combo Wrenches, and 8-19mm semi Deep Sockets for $150. Not bad to add to the Collection. Not sure if I'll use the Semi-Deeps much, but I'm sure some day they'll be the perfect tool I need for something.

^^^Believe me, when I go look at tools I constantly tell myself that there is a difference between what I WANT and what I NEED. It's not fun to think about filling my garage with the tools I NEED though

I've currently got an old Crafstman torque wrench that doesn't work, but was given to me by one of the guys at the garage. I'm going to take it to Sears and see if the can fix or replace it. I also have a Dremel, a few sets of nice Vise Grips, some hand tools, and a nice chop saw. I also have an old Hobart welder that was given to me, but it doesn't work too well. The few things I have are good for the small amount of work on my cars I do at home.

But, I am glad you are getting active on here...it is by far my favorite site.
I hear you on the SO, but why don't you save yourself countless thousands of $$ and start looking at the vintage US brands? They are plenty durable, and since they are vintage, they are cool.
I am getting into the flea market thing, and might try some auctions. Let me know if you want to go and we'll try to make something happen.

I bought a new Snap-On 80 tooth ratchet from a member here last year. I sold it for what I paid without even using it. Yes, it was nice, but the money I spent on it bought me five vintage US ratchets that are just as cool to me and will never break.

And I REALLY like the snap On ratchets. The Matco ones are nice too, but some of the SO things are just great, almost worth the price IMO. Definately worth the price if wrenching is your living.

Sounds like you're a lost cause on the SO deal. Might as well connect a vacuum hose to your wallet, and the other end will be in the tool vendor's pocket

What is your definition of "early"? Because I was born in 1992 and you weren't, so we might be talking about two different times here
I like to arrive there 8-ish, which actually is not early by flea market standards.
