Hi all. I've been reading on this site for a while now but recently actually signed up and just now decided to make my first post. I recently relocated for my civilian job from Nebraska to Missouri and shortly after, actually during the moving process, I got deployed with my national guard unit to Afghanistan which is where I currently am.
While looking for our home in Missouri, my wife and I, each had our wish list for what we wanted in a home purchase. Well, of course, we both had to compromise somewhat, we wanted 4 bedrooms and I wanted a shop. We found an acreage that was as close to our requirements that we could get except it's 3 bedroom and no shop. The house has a 2 car basement garage, and this is where it works out well for me. We are going to convert the basement garage into the 4th bedroom we want and a storage room. Before this gets done though, I get to build my shop, as the current garage is packed with all my tools and equipment! I have to live this up as I doubt my wife will give many other chances for my shop to come before the house.
With me being gone for a while longer, I'm using my down time to try and really thoughtfully plan out the shop. I'm planning on a 32 x 56 x 12 pole barn. I'm going to do the required grade work and hire out the building and concrete and then I'll insulate, wire, and finish the inside myself. I'm planning on a 16 x 10 door on the long side and then on the short side I'm torn between 2- 10 x 10 doors or another 16 x 10. Inside will have white metal ceiling with blown in insulation and the walls will be white metal 3 ft up and then either drywall or osb the rest. Then I'm planning on a propane radiant tube heater ruining the length for winter warmth.
I'm going to use the shop for multiple purposes, part woodworking, auto repairs, welding projects, and as a place to keep the boat/tractor.
Just on here looking for any tips/tricks from others and things people wish they had done differently when they first set up their shops.
