Hello everybody!

Just found this great forum,

I recently bought an old but good Hein Werner ws jack.

Currently taking it apart, sanding and getting ready for a fresh coat of paint.

I read here a few long threads about this kind of jack , hopefully we can all share some info.

Anyway , this is it:

I am missing one bearing race ( previous owner...) and open for suggestions where can I get one.

Thanks!

Our resident expert, Hiball, recommends this place: Hydraulic Parts Supply 620-594-2247. I suspect if anyone would have one laying around, they would.

There's no lack of information here on rebuilding that jack, keep us posted.

Thanks guys for the comments,

I tried calling the phone number above but the don't have the race unfortunately ....

In the meantime I'm spending some time wire-wheeling the paint and priming.

Does anyone have the exact dimensions on the o rings and quad rings needed for this rebuild?

So I'm trying to buy only the seals ,
If you buy them separately at a hydraulic store the cost close to nothing ( 50$ is more than what the jack costed me lol)

find an industrial supply house near you - big warehouse bldgs. out away from the city center

maybe an epoxy paint would be durable?

See if you can use a flat thrust washer: https://www.mcmaster.com/washers/bearings-3/high-load-oil-embedded-thrust-bearings/. I've just been through this, same jack. One of my bearing races had stress cracks in it, but I decided to use it as is. I did go through the exercise of measuring the race in the casting and found something at McMaster that I was pretty sure would work, but now I can't remember what part it was. I do know that it was a flat washer - I don't think you're gonna find a radiused one as a replacement.

As far as seals, you're kind of SOL - I've been down this road; $20 jack that takes a $50 seal kit. If you've got access to a lathe, you can convert the pump seal and the ram seal to cheap modern equivalents. The problem, is that some of the seals are proprietary. There's an oring at the base of the cylinder, I think it's 1.5" OD, 1/8" CS, hardware store part. The pump seal, the release seal, and the tank nut packing are probably specific to that jack - I wasn't able to find a direct replacement outside of a kit. The main ram cup is leather, for a 1.5" ID cylinder, fits on a 1/2-20 threaded stud, common, but you're gonna have to go to a hydraulic supply on that. Did you try HPS, as far as seals? Also, have you opened up the hydraulics yet? It's always a good idea to inspect the innards before buying seals.

Thanks for the reply, it is really helpful.

I didn't open the hydraulics yet , but I just feel like most of the parts I can find on oil seal stores , your info is very helpful on that, I may just leave it an order the set if some parts are specific for these Jack's.

And recommendations about opening the hydraulic?

You'll need a big pipe wrench - I used a 3', 4' would have been better. And I still had to lash the jack handle to it, to get enough leverage. The tank nut is torqued at something like 300-600 ftlbs. The reservoir seal relies on metal to metal contact, that's why it's so tight. To keep from chewing up the tank nut, you can get some dowel pins that fit in the "scallops", with the teeth of the wrench biting into the dowel pins, rather than the nut. You can use small magnets to hold the pins in place, 'till you get the wrench on there. I used a small hydraulic shop press to hold the hydraulic block. Alternatively, if you remove the packing nut, you can pull out the ram, and figure out a scheme with washers, bolts, etc., using the packing nut to hold some fixturing that the pipe wrench can bite into. If you've got some welding capability, the sky's the limit there. In fact, removing the packing nut and ram might be a good way to start - you could inspect the cylinder before you order parts. Above all, you don't want to chew up the interface between the reservoir and tank nut - if you do, it may never seal properly.

Have you read some of the rebuild threads here, regarding the WS? There's a bunch of them, lots of good info.

I spent more than a few dollars restoring this Hein Warner floor jack. I got it out of the company scrap bin. I should have left it there.
This Hein Warner sits in a dark corner behind my air compressor. It is out of sight and I like it this way.
I have other floor jacks and none of them take as much energy to raise my 1940 Ford
The parts for a rebuild are still available. Look for a hydraulic repair shop.

I live in McLean across the river from you and I always found it best to order kits from somebody on here as we don't seem to have a good supplier for industrial stuff locally.

https://www.hcrcnow.com/shop/seal-kits/product/1322 These people have it on the shelf already.
We haven't had a decent Jack repair place locally for along time the last one D&S repair in Alexandria was horrible there another was a place in Woodbridge but like most things around here have been gone.

Tried and tried to open the ****** hydraulics but I hust can free the packing.

I think I'll put that aside for now. Just isn't worth to buy a 50$ tool for a single use.

Pipe wrench and some other improvs

How big? I can tell you that I wasn't exaggerating when I said 300+ lbft. The last jack I opened up, I bought a $20 3' pipe wrench off craigslist, specially for the job. And if you get some dowels to bite into, rather than the nut itself, I think it'll be easier.

Well, with a long break 'cous of covid , i am as done as i can be, with unsuccessful try to open the pump i decided to leave it as-is.

one thing that i am still missing is the rear wheel ball-bearing race,

PLEASE if you have one lying around that will help me finish this restoration!

P.S
Even my wife had her touch to the Jack !

Thanks :)
