A whole month without a post. Been fighting fatigue and shortness of breath. Cardiologist tried adjusting meds a couple of times without any improvement. Just finished wearing a 14-day heart monitor. Pretty cool, my cardiologist can watch what my heart is doing. He called one day while I was working in the shop and told me I was in AFIB and to take it easy. Have a stress test on Thursday and they're trying to schedule other tests. Hope we can sort this out soon.

I have had this 8' x 4.5' EXXON sign for a while. It had spent many years leaning against a barn in Alabama, but it cleaned up pretty well. Decided to build a plywood box for it, add some COB LED strips from superbrightleds.com . A little at a time got it done. My neighbor helped me get it up on the wall yesterday.

John, you mentioned fatigue and shortness of breath, coupled with Doc saying you were in afib, I had same conditions, but never was aware of being in full afib until hooked up to a EKG. Other than those symptoms, no indication whatsoever, thought I had something going on like chest infection.
I’m sure you know, but pay attention to elevated heartbeat, etc. I hope they runs those tests sooner rather than later.

I had ablation done to fix it and it was a complete success. My ablation was done with freezing the erratic electrical pulses with liquid nitrogen.

Good luck!

Craig, it was fatigue and shortness of breath that made me go for a check-up in 2014, and directly to the surgery. It was AFTER the bypass that I had elevated heart rate (120's-130's resting). They brought in a specialist who momentarily stopped my heart ("Did you try unplugging it and plugging back in ?"). The AFIB has been a come-and-go thing ever since the surgery, but usually doesn't stay this long. I keep a pulse-Ox tester handy to check my HR whenever I feel like something is off so I know to slow down. My latest EKG showed something new ... "an occasional delayed beat." WTF ?

John, Craig is the expert and I'm the guinea pig. People with AFib have approximately 5 times greater risk of stroke so it's not something to ignore. I have a blood pressure tester, Pulse-Ox tester and Kardia Mobile EKG tester. Like you, I thought something was wrong when the BP tester showed my resting heart rate was 113 bpm (it was usually in the 40s). First treatment was an electrical cardioversion (involves "CLEAR") but there's also drug cardioversion. My AFib returned six months later so they did a second electrical cardioversion, followed by a more invasive cardiac ablation (catheter through the groin). Over the next 18 months my heart rate slowed to 37 bpm but with intermittent AFib episodes. Rather than do an ablation on the other Atrial chamber, they installed a dual chamber pacemaker. The pacemaker keeps my resting heart rate at a minimum 60 bpm and adjusts higher with any activity. I take Eliquis, an anticoagulant, to reduce the risk of a stroke.

Funny you mention unplugging. The first visit after the pacemaker install, the PA used the remote testing machine to turn my pacemaker off. My pulse immediately dropped to 37 bpm. She turned it back on and said "Looks like it's working." The battery lasts 10 years so I'll either have surgery to replace it or will no longer need a pacemaker.

Bob, I also have the BP cuff and Kardia Mobile. When my HR was so high right after my surgery the specialist stopped my heart with a radioactive isotope through my IV. Nurses came running from all over the hospital to watch since they had never seen the procedure done. It was quite bizarre to see my monitor flat line for several seconds, not a breath being taken in the room, then kick back in, collective exhale. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem. When the AFIB became constant several weeks later I was scheduled for cardioversion. Went in, got prepped, my cardiologist walked in, looked at the monitor and said he didn't see any AFIB. He asked if I had had any type of stressful, bear-down (like taking a tough dump) situation lately. Told him my dog Payton (who we think might be a small part wolf) occasionally challenges me and we have to have a "come to Jesus moment" which becomes very physical and intense. Doc told me it looked like my dog fixed my AFIB.

I've been on Plavix for a few years and my Doc just switched me to Eliquis the day he called about my AFIB.

At my last cardiologist visit I asked what problems we might be looking at. He said it could be new blockage, or leaky valve, or weakened heart muscle, or maybe I'd need a pacemaker, or an electrical problem, or ......we'll see what the tests show.

John, I spoke with my invisible friend. Take care of yourself and have a talk with Payton about Neuticles (https://neuticles.com/). You should be sitting down for my tirade....

Eliquis is jointly marketed by Bristol-Myers Squib and Pfizer. A 30-day supply (sixty 5-milligram pills) retails for $634.99 at Walgreens. With a GoodRx card it's $586.44. With my Medicare Part D insurance it's $223.93. Respectively, that's $10.58, $9.77 and $3.73 per pill. I am supposed to take 730 Eliquis pills per year.

Rather than paying over $2,700 a year for Eliquis, my primary care physician suggested I order Eliquis through Canadian Med Center. Had to mail the prescription to them (3 Forever stamps) and they order the Eliquis from Pfizer. Pfizer ships the pills from a place in Turkey. A 78-day supply (one hundred fifty six 5-milligram pills) is $194.95 or $1.25 per pill. That's a little over $900 a year so about a third of my best US price. I was a little upset that I was buying Turkish medicine but the stuff from Walgreens was manufactured in Switzerland.

Or was it? Drug companies don't have to specify the Country Of Origin (COO) on their packaging. Here's the Eliquis from Turkey:
Eliquis Turkey.jpg
Ruhsat sahibi in Turkish means License holder so that's Pfizer, in Ortakoy Istambul, Turkey and Uretim yeri means Production place so that's Bristol-Myers Squibb in Humacao, Puerto Rico. My pills are produced in Puerto Rico? That's the United States! WTF!!!!

Jeez Bob, are you a drug dealer now ? Count me in. My first prescription was for 90 days at $1000. Eliquis might put me in the poor house.

Payton was neutered when he was a year old. He's 100 pounds of German Shepherd, Great Dane, Mastiff (according to DNA test). He was rescued off the Indian reservation in Eastern Washington at five weeks of age. The dogs run wild in packs on the res. Our vet even told us that he might be several generations of res dog and difficult to re-domesticate. He becomes stubborn at times and needs to be reminded who is in charge. My wife grabs Tiny and leaves the room.

John, in 2013 I broke out in hives from head to foot. Five doctors and 15 months later I got my first Xolair shots, which fixed the problem. Medicare paid for the shots for 6 months and then denied coverage. Doctors spent three months testing me for the cause to prove to Medicare it was idiopathic (no known cause). The shots were $9,000 a month if Medicare denied coverage. I was taking the maximum dose of generic Benadryl to calm the hives and open my throat but it meant being unable to function. Because of the pacemaker surgery stopped the Xolair shots last September. If the hives come back I have to go through the testing again.

Turns out you are screwed if you don't become a knowledgeable drug dealer.

Another thing to know about Eliquis is there is a generic, Apixaban. It's available through canadianmedcenter.com for slightly less than Eliquis but it's manufactured in India. Nothing against India but I have no way of knowing if their drug is safe, effective or identical to Eliquis. I prefer to deal with Cartel names I recognize.

Had to get something accomplished today to take my mind off the impending stress test tomorrow. I decided to install Larry's shop cabinets. They belonged to my friend Larry back in Washington. At one point in his life he owned a Shell service station, Later, he worked for and retired from UPS. We met when he and his wife purchased our house (the first one I built for Linda and I). After cancer took his life I purchased these cabinets at the estate sale, so they have special meaning.

Updates. I failed my stress test because I couldn't get to the target heart rate before getting lightheaded and having trouble breathing. The nurse practitioner Was able to convince the Echo tech to squeeze me in that same day by buying him lunch. So I had an Echo done. Finally had an appt today to go over results of halter monitor and Echo and discuss options. Turns out my heart is working at 25% efficiency, I have AFIB and there is an occasional "heart block" (?). I have a heart catheter scheduled for June 23rd to see what's going on inside. If there's any blockage, they can, hopefully, address it with a stent. They want to check heart muscle and valves as well. They will also be implanting a 'loop' device in my chest at the same time to record my heart activity. Hoping this gets me back to normal.
This news will have to be delivered to my wife tonight gently since we're already in a depressed mood in our house after having to say goodbye to our 11 year old rottweiler, Tiny, on Memorial day. She was a great dog with tons of personality. Our other dog, Payton, is having a tough time dealing with the loss . He wakes me multiple times during the night and mopes around the house all day.

John....Sorry to hear of all the latest news.
Thanks Michael. I guess it's all part of getting old. Every living thing eventually breaks down and dies. A lot of reality hitting home.
A couple of my high school classmates are organizing a 50th reunion. I think there were about 120 kids in our graduating class. We had a very close class. So far they have located 82 out of the 120. 21 of the 82 have already passed away.

After 2+ weeks of doctor-ordered 'rest' I started doing some small projects. First, my car finally is moved from the attached garage into the new garage/shop. It feels good to be able to take it for a ride without having to move stuff out of the way and move it back again.
I used another solid core door to build a bench under Larry's cabinets. Purchased an 8'x2' butcherblock top to build a desk area. Installed a metal storage cabinet and some shallow shelving. Spent a few hours here and there doing some maintenance on my 2004-05 JD lawn tractor (needed oil, filter, trans fluid, air and fuel filter changes. hood had split in half. mowing deck guide wheels were cracked and split). Still need to drop the deck and sharpen or replace blades, replace belts.

I appreciate all of you checking in. One out of three blockages stented, loop recorder implanted in my chest. Doc gave me strict orders to rest, No lifting any more than ten pounds, absolutely no exertion. Gained almost ten pounds in three weeks ! I need to slowly get back in shape.
Riv, I think the challenger draws more attention with the Mike Lavallee artwork.
