For most of my adult life I played basketball in men's leagues and tournaments. I decided I needed a way to slow my physical decline. I ordered a basketball hoop to be able to just shoot around and stay loose. I poured the concrete and got the pole all set up, but I need two strong guys to hold up the 60" ballistic glass backboard while I bolt it to the pole. :dunno:

John, I'm so sorry you have had to deal with health issues and isolation. Growing up in New York I knew everyone on our (dead-end) street and we kids played together all the time. When we moved from Long Island to Wappingers Falls (NY) we quickly made friends and had frequent parties and get-togethers with all the neighbors on our cul-de-sac. We even went on vacation with several families. When we moved to Florida the only people who even acknowledged our presence were the neighbors who moved here from up north. The reason we stay is our children were raised here and they've remained in Florida within an hour's drive. If they weren't here I doubt we would stay.

One of the wonderful things about the Garage Journal is making friends and finding support from around the world.

I completely agree with Bob about moving to another part of our great country. The different regional areas seem to have a different mindset about life. Not in a bad way, just different. A friend of mine moved from Arizona to Kentucky in 2021, after about a year he moved back. He and his girlfriend just didn’t seem like they belonged in that community.
I’m an Arizona native but I lived in Nevada and California as a child. Got moved back to Arizona before I started High School and I’m never leaving. I like to think that I know what most of my neighbors are thinking about this or that. I’m not saying that they agree with me, just that I seem to know where they’ve coming from, if that makes sense.
My wife and I have been down in the Prescott area now for about a year and we can tell that we’ve already made some lifetime friends here!

Two positive developments yesterday. First, my wife decided that she was going back to work today. She's feeling better, less pain, she just has to avoid lifting and reaching.
The minisplit unit in the garage area of my shop had been making an odd noise and temp output was low, so I called the guy who installed it on Monday. He sent one of his guys over yesterday. He checked it out and decided the fan assembly had built up enough crud on the blades that it was creating noise and reducing airflow. He took the unit apart and cleaned everything. Good as new. As he was leaving he asked about my basketball pole. I told him my issue. He wrote down his personal phone number and said to call him on the weekend and he and his brother would come over and help me finish assembling the backboard.
A bright spot.

My wife plays pickleball Saturday mornings with a group of women. She hasn't been able to play for the last few months and probably won't be able to for many more months. I suggested she text the group and get together for coffee and bagels, so she could stay connected. She set it up and I surprised her with something she could give her friends. I appreciate the responses. Some Amazon black Friday pickleballs, some scrap plywood, lots of hand sanding edges. These were a spur-of-the-moment decision. When I was testing the paint color I saw that one light coat allowed the grain of the birch plywood to show through, giving the 'tree' some texture effect (more noticeable in person). Kept me busy for an afternoon. Wife says they were a big hit. 👍

So, we're adding ANOTHER chapter to this thread. This past 9 months my wife has gone through breast cancer surgery/treatment/reconstruction. She has been a fighter the entire way. The episode has shown us that not having family or old friends nearby makes experiences like this more difficult to go through. And we're not getting any younger. We decided to move north, closer to family. Linda's family is in Cleveland area and Dayton. My brother is in Pittsburgh. My closest friend since HS, who is like a brother, is in Cincinnati. We purchased a house in Columbus, Ohio. Driving distance to our most important people. About one week each month, I have been driving back and forth to Columbus trying to get needed work done on the house (14 hours each way). Progress has been slow. At first I was trying to line up subs to get things started and not getting calls returned or no-shows. Then I met bugnut and he has given me referrals and great info. And my RE agent has gone above and beyond to help us in any way possible. Whenever the project begins to frustrate me I remember that I have already met a lot of really great people in Columbus. I'll be making many more trips before we finally get moved.
To the Florida folks, other than hand tools, almost everything else in my shop is available to purchase. I would love to find a woodworker buyer who wants to purchase all the machines, but I can't hold my breath for that. I recently sold off my entire antique Stanley hand plane collection to a guy who drove from Missouri to pick it up. Anybody want to have their own gas pump ? :deathmeta

John, it seems days fly by a lot faster these days. I noticed your birthday was coming up but suddenly it slipped by. It's belated but heartfelt....

By the way, I found a benefit of dyslexia. When asked my age and I say "81", people smile and say "You look good" but when I say "18" they get this really sad look on their face. Some days I like to see the sad face.

Thank you, guys. I appreciate the birthday wishes. Seems like each year I receive fewer birthday calls and texts from family and friends. Beginning another decade now.
I haven't posted very often lately, been busy. I've made 10 roundtrips from Tallahassee to Columbus, OH this year to work on the future home. Still lots to do.
