Well, looks like nearly every single window has one of the two channel balances broken in my new place. I knew something was wrong with the windows when purchasing, but haven't gotten around to really figure this out till now. Well, replacing the balances is the easy part the hard part is trying to figure out what kind of replacement part to get.
From what I can gather, a 5/8" channel is pretty standard. And I can weigh the sash windows or at least estimate to get the right spring strength.
My question is the length of the balance: I'm presuming the length of the balance should nearly equal the height of the sash. What happens if I have one just a little bit taller than the sash? What if it's way too short?
I'm curious, because I've got windows seeming of all different sizes. A few places I've talked to say, bring in the part. I really don't feel like bringing in 20 channel balances to get compared. I'd be simpler for me to make a order and just pick up. Or do you guys recommend that I bring them in to get a match?
