New House from the ground up

So late in 2016 my wife and I started dreaming about a new house. Although there's nothing wrong with our current house we were starting to complain about the same things over and over; lack of space, lack of storage, and the rapidly accelerating growth of the area we're currently in.

We lucked out in finding a house that we loved during a builders showcase event called the Parade of Homes, but hated the location of the house. After spending 4 months looking for secluded 5-10 acre plots of land we began to quickly realize that we would never get everything on our list. To get the lot size meant we were giving up paved roads, cellular service, internet, and sometimes electricity. We finally settled on 1.5 acres that had all the amenities/utilities that we wanted and started building the house.

The house will have a standard 24x22 attached garage, approximately 800 sqft of workshop space in the basement, and within a few years a 30x50 detached shop.

Today was supposed to be the joyful day where we go out and stand in our newly dug foundation hole. Our joy quickly faded as we discovered the hole had been incorrectly dug and our walk out basement was now facing our side yard and not the backyard.

I'm waiting to hear a response from him, so hopefully he owns up to it and makes it right. Question for people more knowledgeable than I; is there anything that needs to be addressed as the side wall is filled back in and the rear (the actual rear where the mound of dirt currently sits) is excavated?

Congratulations on your new home! Nothing beats the smell of fresh lumber and fine finishes :)

I do not know much about construction in your area.

You should not back fill foundations until the floor joists and decking are down. I would not try to "fix" your extra basement until the floor is down. You should have enough room between the outside of your foundation and the side of the excavation so that the wall can be covered with a moisture barrier and insulation and any specified drains placed at the bottom.

Most of the time contractors simply push dirt into the voids and walk away. The proper way is to fill it with lifts and use a plate ******** to compact between lifts. You can expect some settling over time either way.

If this were a fully enclosed basement I'd agree with that, unfortunately one side is a walk out, and currently it's the wrong side. At the least, the correct side will need to be dug out and then the soil will need to be graded again.
