While making the rounds at the Depot today, I spotted this 53" toolbox combo in the main isle. $299 for the bottom $199 for the top. Price was good, color was right, but I don't have the need right now. I will say that the drawer arrangement is what I wish I could have gotten from Snappy. For me it would have been ideal to have metric on one side and SAE on the other, with a full length one at the top.

I couldn't help but snap a couple of pics, and just for the hell of it, I looked at the COO. Made in USA of global components. I almost fell on the floor. All the previous Husky boxes have been China (unless really old).

I figure if US made of global components is good enough for a Dual 80, should be good for a box to store some HF wrenches.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti (I am totally joking)

They had none of these set up or out of the box, but I'm sure that they are about on par with the typical Craftsman offerings.

Not bad. I'd consider it. Probably similar to the US General from HF - But you get it with a little less guilt from buying the 100% China box.

You might even get them to honor a HF 20% off coupon. I have before with an air compressor. Had to go to 3 different Home Depots. But one finally did it.

Of course the new HF 20 % off coupons arent allowed on toolboxes, so I'd use one of the old print outs that doesn't expire until next year.

Anybody happen to know if you can get a better deal on something similar at Costco?

I know Costco had a 50+ inch box at some time

I had a look at this while I was at Home Depot for some other items. Despite being quite large in appearance it is a 100% home-owner grade. Very thin sheet metal, long top drawer is poorly supported by the slides, you can rock that top drawer side to side by inches. The ball bearing slides feel cheap, not even the quality of HF's 13drawer unitThe locking feature is the vertical bar type that you seem on the least expensive Craftsman cabinets.

Overall, yah it is big, but at $299 that is about what you'll pay for two basic Craftsman 26" ball bearing cabinets. 26x2=52" And if you look at it in person, I actually think that is what this Husky cabinet is (made by Waterloo), two inexpensive 26" cabinets joined in the center with a long top drawer module placed on top to form a single rolling cabinet.

i was hoping this would be a good deal that I could buy in on, but I had a very similar expirience today. best thing i could do is turn and walk away. but not everyone did the same because they were loading one in the back of a pickup as i was leaving. :dunno:

The top is probably the only part made in the US. It really is multiple pieces stuck into a cheap frame, you can tell by the 3 seperate locks. Pretty lazy. I agree with just buying a couple CMans and avoiding this, i'd be too woried the outer frame would collapse.

Bottom is 2 separate cabinets? PASS.

Just an FYI-the 52 Craftsman 59631 and 59629 weigh 190 for the top and 345 for the bottom and can be had for about 900 with the current special and 10%friends and family discount for the next few days.

They had a Husky 40 inch box at one of my local Depots a few weeks ago. Took a minute to look at it.
Price was 299 for top and bottom.

On paper, that's a killer deal a 40 inch ball bearing box ,top and bottom for only 300 bucks.

Actually, wasn't that good a deal.
Besides being way thin metal, thinner than most Craftsman homeowners boxes,
they were shallow.
The bottoms were 16 deep the top 14 deep.
Yup only 14 deep.
Do the math, they were getting more per square or cubic inch of drawer space than Craftsman.

Went to my local HD but these weren't even on display.

I was in Home Depot last Monday and noticed they had 4 top & bottoms in the box sitting between the contractors checkouts. When I was back in there a few days later they had 1 bottom box and 2 top boxes - who buys just the bottom without the top? Anyway, they didn't have any out on display, but someone had opened one of the top boxes and I took a look in - paint seemed ok, but not real great, a tap on the metal and it sounded thin and I could easily tin-can the sheet metal top. But realistically what do you expect for that price? I think Craftsman's boxes are quite a step better.

I've been eyeballing the top section for awile now since I am running out of room in my bottom cabinet, i'm gonna wait to see what black friday will bring before deciding. If the price seems too good to be true its because it is, the sheet metal seems very thin and feels very similar to craftsman's home owner line of boxes. (possibly same oem?)

If you zoom in on the picture on the HomeDepot web site, the bottom is actually 3 pieces. Looks like a pair of 26" slapped together (rather sloppily) and a single-drawer mid on top. It looks like the mid isn't even welded to the two bottom pieces, but the handle is attached to the mid. Yikes!

I've had the 59631 as one of my home boxes for 10 years, it's served me well and is still in excellent condition. It's got a pair of 59618 on top of it instead of the 59629, only because it's much more convenient to remove those when moving (I've moved three times since buying and have another move on the horizon). It's also got a side locker on it. Can't overload these things, I mix heavy and light stuff in them. I've got other rollers and top chests so I can keep the loads reasonable and not make any of them a nightmare to put on a moving truck fully loaded.

Everytime I walk into HD, I have to look at these boxes. They are def not for the serious user but sure is hard to pass up for the average homeowner use. I'll prob stop and look each visit until one day it ends up in the bed of my pick up.

I posted about this here a few days ago. Glad to see others opinions. As to who buys it without the top, that would be me! No need for all that storage (top and bottom).

It looks like it is between this Home Depot Husky/Waterloo box and this one from Sears:

009C0533000

It's 18" on bottom and 16" on top (as opposed to 12", which really doesn't seem very deep) but the HD box is $270 after 10% discount and the Sears is $400...thoughts?

Sears offers some pretty heavy discounts at times. I would guess $300 or so. I have one of the medium duty Sears sets and an trading up to the HF 45" model. It is much better built not to mention the extra room.

I would have considered grabbing the top chest (i'm looking for a longer tool chest to go on top of a short cabinet in my garage) but my main gripe was the lack of a full length drawer. Oh well...

Just saw this over my Home Depot. Anyone in here have one that can give a good or bad review on the setup?

after buying a HF bottom box and then looking at the Husky boxes I am very glad I got the HF. HF is larger, much deeper, and much better built. No comparison IMO.

Well I went for the Husky toolbox deal and bought the bottom and top for $498 out the door tax free. I will post some pictures later if anyone is interested. Here was my reasoning on purchasing this setup.

First and foremost was a ton of drawers and storage space for little money. I also have two older well made toolboxes to store any heavy stuff like air tool, hammers, mini sledges, etc. The boxes look great in the garage. I looked at the HF 52 inch setup and it was nice, very nice. Only problem I had was $800 and not honoring the 20 percent off coupons for it anymore. Also the 42 inch setup was well made. Reason I didn't pull the trigger on this was simply the color, had it been the same red they used on the 52 inch I think I would have it in my garage now.

Went and looked at the craftsman setup that was on sale for $699, 50 percent off. It was a 42 inch roller bearing setup and the sheet metal seemed just about as thin as what is on the husky setup. The Husky cabinets were at least both assembled in US although with foreign parts. I try and buy American when I can. Also there is a three year limited warranty, meaning as long as I don't abuse them I can take them back to my local HD and they will take care of me. I've taken other Husky products back before with similar warranties and had no issues.

My first impressions are it looks great, sheet metal is thin. Definitely have alot of play on the one big 52 inch drawer, but as long as you are careful with it and realize what you are dealing with I don't think I will have a problem. Another reason I chose this was a deal on a Snap On slipped through my hands and while reading a good thread on here realized I should spend more money on tools instead of just the box.

I've moved over most of my stuff and still have some empty drawers. Need to get some Hansen socket organizers or build my own so I can get rid of the carrying case my socket set has and keep them in a drawer.

Bottom line on this is if you are just a home owner that pretends to be a motorcycle mechanic on weekends then this box is great. Don't overload the drawers and be careful with it and I think it will last a long time. If you are a mechanic for a living or tend to like throwing tools in the toolbox then do not buy this as you will probably have it trashed inside of a couple of weeks. If I had to do it all over again would I buy this, absolutely! It also helped that I had about $400 in Home Depot gift cards from staying at hotels all year while traveling for work. I guess rewards programs do pay off.

Pictures will follow and if anyone knows where to find the Hansen socket organizers at a reasonable price please let me know. I'm also thinking of building my own as there were some really nice DIY'ers with wood and dowel setups on this site.

tooltopia has the cheapest price i've found on hansen socket organizers. Purchase them individually and you can get the entire 6pc set for around [correction]$46. Only issue is shipping but it still works out cheaper than every place else i could find. Occasionally tooltopia will run free shipping promotions on orders of $50 as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to check this out. Do you know of any retail outlets that carry them such as hardware or Auto parts places?

sears does carry them individually but they're quite a bit more expensive running closer to $10-$12 per tray.

Gotcha. It's a shame they don't have 20 percent off coupons like HF does. That would be a great way to get people in there to spend money. I know Advanced Auto around here has $20 off of $100 dollars purchases every so often.

i saw this too.. i just got my first box (us general 13 drawer) maybe a month ago and still rather the hf box over the husky... the husky felt very thin metal and i usually like testing out the drawers by opening it and applying most of my weight on it and it had a very thin metal feel to it vs my HF box which feels rather rugged.

btw this is my home box and i dont use is heavily like half the mechanics/workers on this forum

just my .02

I agree with you completely on the quality of the HF vs the Huskey. I was just letting people know that for the money I think it's a decent deal as long as you are gentle and don't overload the drawers. The HF box is very nice, as a matter of fact had this been last year when they honored the 20 percent off coupons for everything in the store, I'd be writing up a HF review and how much I liked it right now.

I may still down the road end up with the 52 inch HF if money is available.

They have one set up at my local home depot and IMHO it is pure junk. I opened one drawer and it felt like the whole box was going to tip over. The drawers where hard to open empty, and wanted to twist.
I was very disappointed in the quality of this box and would be scared of it even half loaded.
I guess you could blame it on poor assembly, we all know that the the Home depot workers are not engineer's. But I advise everyone who is interested in this box to check it out for them self before buying, and keeping he receipt close by.

I think this could be a box that has suffered abuse at the store as well. I'm not telling anyone to buy this just letting you know an opinion from someone that has it in the garage. I still have the receipt close by though! lol :bounce:

Untill recently I work at HD and looked at those boxes, they come out every holiday season, IMHO if you are using it for home it is a good box, Pros would not hold up long. Still a smoking deal for the amount of space it gives you.

Yo, who really cares where somethings made aslong as it works.

I choose to buy American when I can and I make sure it works. With unemployment over 9 percent I think it's very important. I'm not hurting during this recession (Thank God) and if buy buying American when I can helps others in this country keep their jobs then I'm happy with that. I have my fair share of foreign products around but I do my best.

I looked at these recently, and they're pretty thin. Believe it or not, the HF boxes are much heavier.
