New in Phoenix area

Hello, been reading the site for awhile, but finally got going on my new garage, so figured I'll introduce myself.

Have a 1/2 acre lot in Phoenix area (very close to the giant spaceship, aka University of Phoenix stadium/Cardinals home). I'm fighting thru the last bit of Phoenix regs red tape to get permits pulled on a new 24x28 garage. I have the red steel laying in the backyard waiting for a foundation. While it's not the largest garage by far, it will beat working outdoors on cars here in Phoenix.

I also have racking to install, to take advantage of the 14' eave heights. Would like to add a lift in the future, but for now have a Kwiklift to use.

Little concerned about a steel building in Phoenix becoming a giant oven, but will have a few vents and will add evap cooling as well. Should work for most of the summer months. (fingers crossed).

Couple outstanding questions:
Flooring protection - posted a question in flooring section asking for suggestions, as I'm still pre pour.
Insulation - Don't have any selected yet, but looking at the foam and/or radiant foil stuff. Have to try to cut down the steel heat somehow.

You can maybe figure out what type of cars from my id. Think front engine, water cooled varieties.

My opinion, I would insulate any way that I could. If needed, I would put up drywall or something similar, to hold it in place. I would get as much insulation as I possibly could to make it work.
Another thought, and you can do with it as you please, I would get solar panels on top of that garage. There are two reasons for this. First, extra electricity to power whatever needs you have for your house and garage. The second is they are about 2 inches off the roof of the garage, so that there is an air break between the roof and the solar panels. I am thinking that it would make it a lot cooler in the garage because the sun would not be beating on the roof.

I like the solar panel idea, hadn't thought of that one. Not sure what weight loading the roof can take either, but an interesting idea to get an air gap.

Wondering on venting as well, has anyone else experimented with vents either low, hi, or some combination? I'm inclined to think vents nearer the top would help dump some of the heat, but again, not sure.

They are called ridge vents, and a lot of local contractors install them. You can go into some neighborhoods and drive down a street, and will see the ridg of the roof looks to be about an inch or so above the next area of the roof. They are supposed to work. I have no experience with them.

Welcome aboard. I can think of a few members that are happy to see another fellow Porsche owner on the forum. Unfortunately, I am not one of them

Red Leader - Moving right on past your Porsche car comments Interesting reading your garage build thread. I have an old saw extremely similar to the one on page 4 of your thread (and my god the motor on that thing is heavy - actually the entire thing is a backbreaker), and a grinder very similar to the one on page 8. Don't have pics of them but will see if I can clear out some space and get a couple. Maybe those will appeal more to you vs the cars

Its always good to see another desert dweller on here. I have been working in my attached garage the past 4 summers with no cooling other than a fan and not much insulation, and it isn't a lot of fun. I'd insulate it as much as possible, and really consider the solar panel idea. That is a good idea I hadn't considered myself, but will keep it in mind.
