New in western WA

[Backyard Imports]

Hello everybody.

I have been a long time lurker on Garage Journal and figured that I should sign up and try to contribute.

We recently purchased an old 5 acre dairy farm in the Tacoma area and I have been spending the majority of my time repairing/updating the house. It was built in the 40's and had never had any renovations or updating done to it except for some new kitchen cabinets. (Same owners since new.) When I am not working on the house I have been re-purposing the 50x60 pole building that was used for hay and horse/cow storage into an auto and fabrication shop.

I live by the motto "why pay someone else to do something that I can do myself?". This means that I take on way more projects than I have time to handle, but I figure that I won't be able to leave this planet until I am all caught up and that means that I should live for a very long time.

I look forward to lurking more and applying your great ideas to my projects. I will try to contribute as much as possible from now on.

After I removed the blackberry bushes that completely covered the back and side of the building, this is how it looked.

I started ripping all of the 40 year old siding off.

Added some gravel as fill, compacted it down, and laid a 6" slab.

Did some framing and added insulation and siding.

I have since installed the 12x12 overhead door as well as two 8x7 doors (one on each end) on the small side of the building.

I should probably start a build thread. This is going to get messy

The "barn" shown in the pics is a completely different monster. It will be one of the last things on the property to be addressed because it will used for nothing but "fun" stuff.

Summit actually.

We sold our newly built house in Olalla that was on 5 acres. One of my only conditions was that I wouldn't go for a smaller lot size. Summit is one of the only areas with large lots still available and is still very close to the city. (I don't care at all about being close to things but since my wife works there...)

BI: I was driving by your area just yesterday. looks like you did an amazing job rehabbing that old pole building.

if you want to start a new thread in garage gallery which you should might i suggest making it picture heavy and posting often so it doesn't get lost since you are a new member.

i like to read as many members as i can because there are a lot of great projects going on, but if your thread gets buried in the back pages other members including myself just don't have time to scroll through all the pages.

take care and did you find any cool old steel tools or machines or a big vise on the property?
