Hi guys !
Your board is terrific

I'm from France, where we only use concrete, block or stone to build homes or garages (steel for some comercial use buildings)
I'm now living in Canada (Gatineau)
So... I 've a garage to build, I've a lot of ideas, you give me a ton of other...
But I havn't any notion in wood construction
Do you knows a good website where I can find the B-A BA

Thanks

thank you for your cordial reception!
Is my english to bad or my question to much stupid ?

Anyway... after deeper observations, yours garages seem to be more show-rooms than workshops... its not what I am interrested in

Dude, I don't know much about construction, but perhaps you need to just let them have more time. Someone could be out there writing a big response to your questions...

Heh rinho... some of us only log in every couple of days :)... and some may not understand your question...

What are you looking for? Ideas on shop design... rules and regs on building stick framed buildings...???

Yes, you're right, and I knows that...
Excuse me, I was just frustated to not receive at least a "hello"

The first question I can specify is about how the wall are fixed on the slab ?
(screw, sceal wood ?)
I don't find any picture about.

I think I wouldn't have any trouble to make what I can see, but if you know somewhere I can find rules and regs (in french or even in english), I would be glad.

I'm going to own my house in 15 days and must build a garage before end of september

Here is a guidebook (in English, unfortunately) which details quite a bit about wood construction: http://www.awc.org/pdf/WCD1-300.pdf

And there is nothing wrong with building with what you are familiar with - you could certainly build with concrete or block and stone would look fantastic!

As for the "shop" vs. "showcase" - there are those of us on here more along the "shop" end of the spectrum. Don't get discouraged - poke around a bit and you'll be amazed at the variety here.

And welcome to the board!

rinho something to consider is that foundation types, anchorage to slab or footing, anchorage of roof trusses, etc may be specific to where you live. A good place to start is with your local building codes. After that most standard methods of wood framing will apply and can be found on the internet or in books. Welcome to Canada! Your English is quite good by the way. It's probably better than some I know where it's their first and only language. It's certainly better than my French.

Thanks for the links and informations.
I also have the technical inspection of my future house this afternoon... the inspector does an excellent job, with a lot of explanation and his report come with a tru building bible (home reference book)
With all that, I got now learning materials ! Great.

@ Stingray: What do you think about wich foundation types I 'd better use ?
I'm living in south of Québec, close to Ottawa.

@ PAToyota and 78fj40 : I'm also a Landcruiser addict ! After 10 years and 500.000 km with a HJ61 (6 cyl 4.0 turbo diesel) I'm now driving a UZJ100 (V8 4.7) bought in California.
As soon as my garage is built, I will buy an another one (runner, hilux or tacoma) and prepare it for off-road driving

rinho my personal choice is a monolithic slab on grade with a contoured edge. It's virtually all that's used here for garage type buildings and they are pretty much problem free. As I've learned here on the board building codes and practices elswhere can vary widely. Here in Saskatchewan it commonly gets to -40 celsius in the winter and can get to + 40 in the summer. Winter snows can be 5 feet seasonally. Spring run offs can put us under water and in the summer we can see a single week with 8 inches of rain or 2 months with none. It's a pretty extreme climate. In other regions I see here on the board they are using some pretty extreme foundations in what I consider comparatively mild climates. For reference we burry water lines below 8 feet to keep them from freezing. In the end use what the local government requires of you and what your contractor is comfortable with.

I'm a Toyota guy too. We've got two 2nd gen Supra's and 98 Runner. Gotta love those bullet proof Yota's

I'm with StingRay on this one... even though we're not in the prairies... all our garages/shops here are built with monlithic slab on grade foundations.

-45C is the coldest I've ever seen here (but the avg. coldest winter days run -30C or so), surrounded by lakes, in the Canadian Shield and still, pretty much the only way Garages are done.

As the CMHC is involved in most home purchases and construction in some way shape or form... check thier site out for more info (in French and English).

Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation
http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/

Slab-On-Grade Construction
http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/publications/en/rh-pr/tech/2000-127E.html

And here is a book you may want to look at:

CHBA Builders Manual
http://www.buildermanual.com/

And here is a pretty basic site about building a garage... unfortunately all in english... but fairly comprehensive.
http://www.doityourself.com/****/garages

Lots of information on google once you know the terms to look for... but I would suggest heading into the local building office first as they have a wealth of info, pamphlets, and are the ones whom decide overall what you can or cannot build.

That would be Toontoys. I am familiar with it. I see the Dude here is a member there as well. Scrolling through it a bit I actually see a couple of people I know. Jason and his wife Heather from Bradwell live just few miles up the road from me and both work at Amigo's Auto wrecking just two miles out my back door. The internet shure makes the world feel small.
