These are fairly new... Not sure exactly when they came out so forgive me if they have been discussed already on GJ. I have not heard about them until today. This is a screen shot of an email I received earlier today from Menards. When I opened the email and saw this tool I couldn't believe my eyes. lol. I know exactly what I think about this new tool but I'm going to save my opinion for later. I just want to see if I'm completely off base, or if the majority of you guys would agree with me. lol

Lets hear it.... what is your initial opinion about this tool from just seeing this picture. (unless you've handled one in person, then feel free to elaborate)

Aside from it being a hopeless ************* resembling a Vise-Grip in appearance, I'd be a bit more forgiving if the clown who designed it had at least got the knife blade on right.

Perfect example of something designed to be bought as a gift by non-tool people.

The design of the blade, are you referencing the straight and serrated edge combination or the tip ?

Personally for me an EDC with a combination blade works great as I don't know what I'll be doing one minute to the next. While at work at the FD, it's become about priceless having both on my knife.

While it's a gimmick tool, I doubt I'd buy one unless they went on sale for 10 bucks. It'd work alright tossed in the console of the truck or in my bunker gear at the FD.

The 1st thing that came to mind when I saw it on TV was "cute". Too often, when someone makes a tool to preform multiple functions, in the end it does nothing well.

I vote 2 thumbs down.

Same here, in EDC I carry a leatherman squirt, and those little pliers do get used a lot, but this is way too big for EDC, and I would never reach for it in the shop over a dedicated tool, but in my bunker gear I keep all sorts of multitools and a serrated/combo folding knife because you never know what you might need.

LOL, yeah, first thing I noticed. The Leatherman Crunch gets this right, and makes the blade usable. This one makes no sense.

This, an EDC?!? ROTFL, that's a good one.
I wouldn't spend ten bucks on a pair of Vise Grips (Grip-On, sure), and all the added **** IMNSHO detracts rather than adds value to the tool for shop use. But yeah, if I saw it for a buck at a flea market, I'd probably pick it up, and drop it in my trunk next to the spare tire and extra ice scraper for those times when I've not nothing else that'll do the job.

While I don't like combination blades, preferring to have seperate plain and serrated, I was referring to the pivot being on the wrong end. Blade alongside the pliers makes it sort of useless, IMHO.

My old memory is hazy at times but I seem to recall many years ago they made a vise grip with a knife blade, but like I said I could be wrong and it was another company that made them.

I don't recall this (unless you're thinking of the Leatherman Crunch), though I do have an adjustable wrench with a knife blade buried somewhere...

edit: but you seen to have a better memory than you think:

Everything old is new again. At least the original incarnation had the blade in the right orientation:

Oh boy maybe someone will get me both the long nose and short nose versions so I can put them in my desk drawer with the rest of my "can't live without them", "what were they thinking", "he'll love this" useless gimmicky tools.

 And Merry Christmas

Lots of good suggestions for names can be found just above your post:
"total garbage"
"what were they thinking"
"useless gimmicky tool"
"poor excuse for a hammer"
"dead weight"

The possibilities are endless.

There was needle nose and a wide mouth, I call them whale jaws, also. I have a couple but they got relegated to glove box duty.

Just as I thought. Most of you guys agree with me..... total garbage. Lol

I get this vision of a bunch of Irwin management sitting around a table when one of the designers reveal the drawings for this new tool. Right away the CEO shows excitement and enthusiasm for the potential of this new product. At that point, everyone else in the room becomes scared to say anything negative becuse "the boss" seems to like the idea..... and as a result, this POS actually made it to production.

I bought myself a couple pair of these long nose pliers they are very well designed the jaws of the pliers are longer than the knife blade

I paid $4 each for them and plan to remove the knife and just use them as locking pliers

They are nice for atv's. I have the older one in my cow checker. It's good for repairs in the field and fits in the sealed under seat box.

I think the leatherman one is better executed. Personally I have a regular leatherman and never found it all that useful. But then again I have a good setup of tools in the truck and in my atv bag.
