Hi Guys

I just got my hands on a new (to me) Enco lathe and bandsaw and would welcome any information, opinions or tips on these machines. Here are a few pictures:

Unfortunately, while looking them over, we found that the main support for the tail end of the lathe is cracked all the way around (at the top). We have the capability to weld cast, but I would welcome any input on how serious this problem is and how should best be resolved:

One more picture, just a new (but old) toy I picked up today:

Thanks in advance for any input:thumbup:

That's a nice bandsaw, you'll use that more than you know. Pitty about the lathe. It looks brand new, any chance of getting a warranty from Enco?

Nice bandsaw. You lucked out on the blade welder attachment that came with it. I have to tig weld mine.
I suspect that the crack in your lathe is only the paint. Many of those Asian lathes are bolted together. I'd put money on the chance that those are two pieces bolted together and that it cracked the paint in transport.
Whats all in the boxes under the lathe? Did you get all the tooling with it?The tooling often exceeds the value of the machine.
Good buy.

Thanks for the responses guys.

When I first got the lathe, I had thought maybe just the paint was cracked. I cleaned the paint off of one corner (not shown in pics) and could distinctly see separation in the metal.

I wasn't aware, however, of the possibility of it being multi-piece construction rather than a 1 piece casting. I will have to take off a little more paint and check thoroughly tomorrow. I was fairly certain it looked more like a crack than a flange edge, but I can't say for sure. Let's hope!

In regards to the blade welder; It is a very nice feature but unfortunately it is not currently operational according to the prior operator. I will be investigating (and most likely asking for help) soon.

There is a ton of tooling with the lathe. Will unpack and post pics soon.

BTW, the machines are not "mine", but rather the service shop I run just inherited these from one of our manufacturing facilities. While I would love to have all the tools/equipment I have at work at home, i feel very lucky that I have free use of the shop and all equipment/materials/supplies for personal use.

Are you talking about the parting line in the last picture of the lathe? The bed is bolted to the base, it does not appear to be cracked from here.

Don't scratch er up if you don't need too.I see an access panel at the end. Just pop it off and have a look inside. If it's bolted you should find the bolts right there.
I wana see the goodies in the boxes.

not sure about the problem I am looking at on the lathe. if it what I think I see I suspect that therer is nothing wrong with it but rather where 2 pieces were put together and then painted over

The bed is bolted to the base of the machine, it is standard practice. No crack there. :)

Looks like you're in high cotton, what are the plans for the two machines? Do you need three phase power? More pics of the tooling please.

I want to learn how to use a lathe, not sure I want buy one to do that though.

Hah. I know el zippo about the actual components, but I make parts on them all the time, you're not alone there. Enco makes some decent budget priced stuff, and it should work fine for most any application you'll be using it for.

I'd check the ways and the chuck for any signs of obvious faults. Oil everything to the manual, and if there isn't one, ask around. Check for worn components, gears, etc, anything out of spec.
