so my employer sprung for a 15k lb forward lift so we could start servicing the many shale gas trucks around here now and I noticed the safety lock on the drivers side of the lift does not engage-manager got lift guy in to check it and he says lift has to be disassembled to repair it-wont be able to get to it for awhile because they are very busy-he asks me if I set the lift on the locks when a truck is up in the air and I say yes-he tells me they are safety locks only and not meant to support the load of the truck and the lift is safe to use until they can get back to fix it-do I call B.S. on this because my manager thinks its safe to use with only one working safety lock since the lift guy said"use it but be careful"every lift I have ever used tells you to put it on the safety locks rather than relying on the hydraulics to support it.

I had a situation like this at one of my jobs. We were receiving equipment by container shipment and our dock and unloading equipment was not large enough to unload the containers safely. I ask one of the owners if he was prepared to tell our wives and children that dad is not coming home tonight because he wanted to save/ make a few extra bucks. We have not received container shipments again. I would think the shop's liability insurer would think other than to use a lift with a faulty safety system. Just my thoughts.

Might want to call the lift manufacturer and get it straight from the horse's mouth. That way you have better ammo to present to your boss and the sketchy-sounding lift guy.

on the locks or no lift! Hyd line can break, your boss is ill informed, maybe he would like to risk his life under that lift.

HOLY ****! That's the most flagrant, careless and irresponsible thing an employer/manager could say. Do not work under that thing until the manufacturer fixes it and certifies it's proper operation. And if the safety locks "aren't meant to support the rated load, WTF good are they? The guy sounds like an idiot, only concerned with getting his hands on as much of the easy oil money as he can get in the shop.

Someone must have taken it more seriously than the first lift guy since two different guys showed up this morning to fix it!

My rage kicks in at this point!

It is not a lift it is a LIFT SYSTEM and one of the pieces of the system is not working.

There are many threads where people are killed by falling vehicles. You are the same as guys going under a vehicle without safety stands.

Please post the brand name that shipped this defective product.
