A few weeks ago, I signed papers on a brand new Brother Speedio S700X2 cnc mill. I took delivery of it yesterday. I've had my eye on this machine since I first got into machining, so it's very satisfying to finally be able to make it happen. It has a 16k rpm spindle, 21 tool magazine, MPG jog handwheel, Through Spidle Coolant prep, Blum Tool Setter and Blum Spindle Probe. This is replacing my Fadal 3016 that I've had for the past 3 years. It was a great machine, but time to step it up.

Is that the same Brother company that makes the Sewing Machines and Computer Printer/Scanner/Copier?
Yup. And label makers. They just happen to also make wicked fast cnc mills and have for a long time. And it runs like a sewing machine. I’ve been told the 16k spindle will literally run at 16k all day every day and is designed to do so.

Do you have to keep garage door closed to keep neighbors from eyeballing what you are doing/ complaining about you running a business out of your garage since you are in town?

On a new machine, they have a dealer. The dealer is Yamazen. Same sort of setup as a car dealership. They handle everything. They have techs come out and set up the machine, install any field options that you bought that aren’t already installed in the machine (probing). They don’t handle any electrical. I had my electrician come out and install a step down transformer I needed but had already bought to take it from 240V down to 208V. I could have done it but he was faster, had everything to do it and it looks way better. After it’s got power and air, the techs prep it all and fire it up and level and calibrate everything and make sure it’s working correctly. Yamazen has another applications guy they will send out to walk me through operation of the machine and control. I understand the concepts, but need to know the actual execution

Eh, not really. I’m on a dead end street. My neighbors all know and they are chill. I’m also the guy that fixes everything. I have a good relationship with all of them. And I don’t really do anything annoying.

I keep telling myself I don't need my own forklift. But man, it would be nice.

Congratulations! Probing is really nice to have. I (the business I own) stepped up from various older CNC mills to a brand new Mazak VMC with 4th axis and Renishaw probing last year. It is a great boost to productivity and ease in setup!

Granted I'm not working 40+ hours a week, but I was bumping up on where machine time was holding me back. I couldn't really make parts any faster. If I had shop space, I may have just bought more Fadals. But...man, this thing is nice and I think just the quality of life improvements will be huge. The Fadal was good for what it was and served it's purpose, but this is better in every way.

I am in the same boat. I have the machine shop at work to make part of our products. So the machines run only a few hours a week. But having the modern mill makes setup and running parts much easier. Less fighting the machine and less effort into rerunning a part. Quality of life is a big thing. Good for you!

That is awesome. How much faster is this than your old Fadal? I assume this will speed up production of your products quite a bit.
Can you give us an idea of what this cost installed? I know, if I have to ask… 😂

This first op for these parts was right about 10 minutes. On the Speedio it’s about 3 min. With all the options it was right about 6 figures.

I have many years of wrenching on Brothers and Robodrills, you will not be disappointed.
We abused the **** out of them and as a result we got to know them very well. Tough little machines.
When I left we had 15 Brother Mills and 50-some Fanuc Robodrills.

Very nice! I'm running an old VMC15 with a 7500rpm spindle in my garage, so I know what you mean about the machine holding you back. I hope some day I can get to the point where you are!

My 3016 was a 10k. So that part was nice, but man, the control and workflow improvements on top of the speed are massive.
