Local machinery dealer had this on his floor, as soon as I saw it I had to have it.

Solberga is a Swedish drill maker and IMO makes one of the very best small job shop drill presses.

If you've never used a gear head drill press, you're in for a treat. No belts to slip or wear out, changing spindle speeds takes seconds, runs very quiet, lots of torque.

This particular drill is a 22" model, meaning you can drill to the center of a 22" diameter circle, giving it an 11" throat. It has a 2 speed reversing motor so you can power tap with it, has a #3 MT spindle and is rated to push a 1-1/4" twist drill in steel. It also has a power feed on the quill which has 4 different feed rates.

I sold my 20" Clausing to a customer who needed a drill press for what I paid for it, and went and picked up the Solberga.

Unloading the drill with the bridge crane is almost like cheating.

It has a pretty nice range of speeds for general work. Goes a little bit slower than my Clausing which is nice for tapping.

The table is in very nice shape, only a few divots of shame under the vise. Nothing major. It also has this really cool side set of tee slots so you can clamp something vertically.

The table also loosens and pivots around on the center, allowing you to offset the vertical tee slots under the spindle without having to loosen up the head.

All told I am very happy with my new drill press, I had to do a little drill tap job yesterday and it did an outstanding job, so it passes the first test. I'm sure it will fit right in around my shop.

I have the pretty much the same one but 24" with Mt4 taper one of the best drill presses ever made. The only thing that would compare is an Alzmetal.
I paid 400, and stole it. I also have a 20" Doall branded EFI, and Rockwell branded EFI radial. Both geared head.

Nice, I would love MT4!

Alzmetall makes about the best drill press in the world for a non-radial, I agree. Hard to beat a Carlton for radials as far as I’m concerned.

Very sweet find there! Having that 120rpm is perfect for S&D or even tapered shank drills. And I like that side-T on the table.

Does the power feed disengage at an adjustable depth stop? I made a lot of parts on the Clausing 20" you mentioned, drilling into one side of a deep slot. I set the stops, started power feed and did other tasks while it was drilling.

Giovanni Breda made a pretty nice small but capable radial drill. 48" arm x 8" column. Sold under several nameplate "makes" but Breda is the OEM.

If I ever find a "barn find" Alzmetall its coming home with me no matter what kind of a payday loan I have to take lol :D

Ha ha, I'm with you on the Alzmetall, but this should hold me over until I get one. Probably won't sell this one even if I find another good one.

Yes, there is an adjustable kickout for the powerfeed. I haven't really messed with it much, but it appears as simple as adjusting the stop dog to hit a fixed pin on the quill handle to knock it out of gear.

Nice drill press! Yesterday I picked up a similar drill, an Arboga, 24" swing, no power feed though. While it needs a good cleaning, it is in real nice shape, 1 tiny divot in the table, less than 1/8" deep. Surprising how compact it is for a drill press with a 24" swing. Has a cool foot pedal for tapping, step on it once it stops the spindle, step on it again it starts the spindle in reverse. Even came with a parts and user manual.

Nice! Arboga makes a very nice drill.

Gear head drills are surprisingly compact for their swing, must be due to the lack of pulleys and drive belts.

That reversing pedal is really a cool feature, I wish mine had something like that.

What’s the spindle taper on a 24” drill?

That reversing pedal is really a cool feature, I wish mine had something like that.

I setup a VFD for tapping in my 20" Clausing. It has a selector switch for "drill" and "tap".

In tap it calls out something like 10Hz fixed, which in lowest vari-pitch speed is pretty low (~50rpm). It also calls for reverse rotation. The input from stepping on the pedal calls for forward rotation.

More or less its fail-safe. You have to step on the pedal to tap downward into the workpiece, and step off when you're at full depth. If the operator faints on the job or the cord to the footpedal gets torn off, or the internal contact fails, then it calmly backs itself out of the material instead of heading for the proverbial brick wall.

Edlund and Avey make some nice compact drill presses in the same flavor. Often super low prices because of the 3phase motors.

Mine is a 3MT taper. Tried cleaning it up a little, should clean up nicely, though will need a lot of elbow grease. Nice to get a machine with original paint, even though I'm not crazy about the color.

Is there any provision on the Solberga for eliminating quill slop?
