Brand new 60gal 3.7 Hp single phase belt driven compressor knocks once over 100 psi. Did the break in per instructions. Maybe this knock is normal for this compressor was hoping to find some advice from guys that know compressors. If this isn’t normal want to return immediately and exchange it. I’ll attach a video I uploaded to YouTube. Thanks

Does sound like something rattling. Rod knock usually go away at high pressure. I have the Lowes version of the same compressor. They are kind of a disposable compressor but mine is going on 8 years now. If its new and you cant find the rattle I would try to return it.

Since it’s pressure related the only thing I can think of is maybe the check valve for the tank maybe it starts to stick once over 100 psi. I was just wondering if anybody else had any experience with this particular noise at pressure

Not that model, but my belt had too much slack from the factory.

I think it’s the belt slapping under load. With that said it’s already pretty tight how freaking tight does it need to be. Seems like I would have to loosen motor mounts and stick a pry bar in there to really tighten her up. If the general consensus is that it’s the belt I’m gonna leave it alone and keep it. If you guys think it’s something else maybe exchange the damn thing.

Any guarantee with the unit? ...I would assume since its new.

Ya if it were as easy as picking it up and throwing it in my truck I’d return it right away. Getting this thing off my truck by myself was a miracle let alone having to load her up again. If I can avoid returning it and having a piece of mind I’ll just hang onto her.

Make sure the pulleys are aligned with a straight edge and check that you have about 1/2" deflection up & down (1" total) in the centre of the belt between the pulleys(with around 5lbs of force). Too tight is worse than too loose. It may just need to be run for awhile as the belt could have taken some memory from being stationary for awhile sitting in a stockroom. Having to adjust the belt after awhile would be fairly normal so returning it might not get you any further ahead minus all the extra hassle of transporting it each way again.

If it is easy enough can you run it with the belt off? That would eliminate a large portion if it still makes noise.

Thanks for the input! Ya I pinched the middle with my hand maybe less than an inch total she’s tight. I did notice some shavings from the belt at the bottom of the housing. I went through alignment issues with my alternator on my big block that was actually the first thing I checked when I took the cover off lol. Didn’t put a straight edge on her but she looks straight. This is more than likely a tension/alignment issue which is fine. For the price I expected some tinkering just wanted to make sure the motor wasn’t a lemon.

Only makes noise at pressure. 100 and above. If I took the belt off only the electric motor would spin. I’m more worried about the pump having an issue. Seems like a tension/alignment issue. Thanks!

I've had that same Sanborn model for a few years and it never made a sound like that. It sounded like the guard rattling, but you took it off. I'd exchange it for peace of mind. Cry a little while exchanging it, or scream in anguish when it smokes the rod out of warranty.

Ya not the answer I wanted but might be the right one. Might try some soap and if that fixes it I know it’s the belt/alignment. If not probably will wrestle that biatch into the truck back to Menards and deal with their out of date customer service options.

Call for service or have whoever you bought it from come exchange it. In a year when it fails you will be kicking yourself.

with it running, and being very very careful, push around on the backside of the belt guard to see if you can change the sound . also anything that looks like it could be rattling or setting up that harmonics . I even wonder if the flywheel is a tad loose?

I used to be a Hd part timer. I was the guy that they sent for **** like this. Retrieve broken tractors. Uninstall a kitchen of cabinets. Put up some little old ladies Xmas tree.
I’m serious. Worst thing that will happen if you ***** is you can say well it will be scratched as you will have to lay it to get it in truck. I’d ask they send a midget forklift and take it back as you spent 100 bucks renting people and truck to get it.

I tried bar soap on the belt nothing. Also tried more tension on belt nothing. Grabbed the housing couldn’t do anything that affected the noise. The more I cycled it the worse the knock/rattle got so I called Menards they want me to pay for shipping. I talked to the assistant store manager nothing he could do for me so will try the store manager. Last resort is hooking up the chain hoist tossing the piece of junk in my truck and exchange it. Would be nice if they could wire it up the new one at the store to make sure it frickin works.

You're not going to get that kind of service at box store prices.

If it was me I'd remove the belt and check that the compressor pulley is concentric. Then check for play in the motor and compressor bearings. If they're not obviously bad, then replace the belt. It really does look like belt vibration.

Having experience with Menards customer service and store managers, they won't do ****. If you call Menards corporate, prepare to be belittled. When you get it back to the store, customer service will simply ask "Is there anything wrong with it?" Just tell them it makes a loud knocking sound while running. Get a refund, pick out another one.

Try the old mechanic's trick with a length of flexible tubing. One end to your ear and the other on various parts of the compressor pump. The air intake on those is very noisy BTW.

Ya I’m working a 24 hr shift today. We’ve got a 60 gallon ingersol at work and I was just listening to it run and it’s a lot smoother but I did notice the belt isn’t fluttering as bad as mine. I get it... much better compressor. I’ll throw it in my truck and try one more. If the next one is **** I’ll get a refund. The refund will be in store credit(bought compressor with rebate) otherwise I’d go with a different brand.

After 2 Menards locations and an a$$ ton of incompetent employees the new compressor is going through it’s break in right now. Will report back once I get her up to pressure.

How is the new compressor working for you?

Is this the 60 gallon model they sell? If so, I am looking at picking one up. Just curious your thoughts now after using it for a while?

Haven't read all the responses here- but how warm is it in your garage- or where ever it located.

My ol Sanborn rattles and bangs around while running if it's cold-warm doesn't do it.

Belt slapping is a big part of my noise- running 2 belts.

YMMV

Just my 2 cents
