Thought I should at least say howdy and give a big thanks. I've been bothered by the wife's spare wheels and tires taking up valuable floor space. I hate the clutter. So, I started googling tire racks and found several manufactured items, some looked promising, others looked like a way to separate me from my cash. Then, I found a couple that you guys built and decided to go that route. I figured I need 90" to fit the 8 tires. I ran to Home Depot and picked up 1 1/2" iron pipe. Holy smokes, that stuff is stiff, plus $45, then 2 1.5" flanges ($10 each) and a 2" elbow ($5). But, just before saing fine, I checked out the 1" pipe. Even at 10' and no supports, it seemed plenty strong. So, I save about 30% and went with 1" everything. I have about $70 into this and 2 hours. It holds 1 set of 19" wheels and tires and a set of 18" tires. There are 2 ss cables hleping to secure the middle and left side to the ceiling and wall. The length is 92" and depth is 18".

I mounted a 2x4 to the right side so I'd have a secure brace for the right flange.

It sure seems plenty strong.

Y'know, this may not get the kudo's it's due - but I think it's absolutely perfect. A simple, well-thought out and sturdy design that didn't cost much - that I like!!

I built some shelves in my shop and used redi-rod (threaded rod) up through the rafters. Similar to the SS wires I guess. I gotta build a rack like this! Thanks - good photo's too.

I like it a lot. I need to do something like this, too. I have too may wheels/tires stacked up in my garage, and they take up a lot of space!

Now, did you thread the pipe yourself or buy it already threaded? My dad actually has a lot of iron pipe in his garage, plus fittings and those flange jobbers for mounting to the wall. I could do this almost for free, I bet.

Thanks for the compliments. Some of my favorite things are cheap and simple :) :)

I had Home Depot cut and thread the pipe. I don't even think I'd want to cut that stuff with my Sawzall.

Hey, nice rack!!

That's how I would have done it, although instead of cable, I'd use pipe hangers and threaded rod.

If you want to get **** and not mark up your wall, you could add a tee on the short pipe and have another long pipe to the far wall, then a ****** (heh heh, I used rack, ****** and **** in a post :lol_hitti ) to the flange on the wall. Then the tires wouldn't touch the wall. My father used to own a service station, it had two pipes that went across one of the bays like that. Part of the reason was that behind the tires, up against the ceiling was a 1x6 with hooks and there were belts hung on it, you reached up behind the tires with a wooden pole with a hook on the end to get the belts. They were up about 12' whereas the tires were up about 9' and about a foot off the wall.

great build, I will be copying this one for sure. It seems like the lowest cost so far and the least intrusive. Thanks for posting.

I like it. Simple is good.

"I've been bothered by the wife's spare wheels and tires taking up valuable floor space."

There's a statement you don't hear often. :)

Very nice job.. It make me sick though to think 2 pieces of pipe and 2 flanges plus a couple cables cost 70 bucks, what a rip off it should only be half that. Welcome to GJ Don

I like it!

I'll probably do something similar eventually. At last count, I've got 68 wheels and tires out in the storage shed, just stacked, and it's a veritable PITA when trying to get to the bottom 4 tires in a stack...
