Evening! My name is Jonathan and I have been a member since 2013. I am avionics tech, I work on corporate jets in Van Nuys, California. I am also a member of the United States Air Force Reserve (18 years in)based out of Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV. I was active duty for 10 years, 3 of those years I was assigned to the Air Force Thunderbirds and I was dedicated crew chief for #7 on the 2005-2006 season. I love this forum and website, I have gained so much knowledge and gained so many useful ideas. I currently own a white Snap On KRSC43 tool cart at work and I own a white Viper box for my home use. I have used tools since I could walk, on my grandfathers farm to multi million $$ jets I maintain today. My hobbies are my wife, my dogs and my Jeep. Thank you for all who contributed here and I hope to pass on my knowledge.

Thank you. I normally work out of an extra large ammo bag, so my box stores my specialized equipment. Stuff I need but normally don't use. Unlike most A&P mechanics, we don't work out of one particular hangar. We have 7 hangars and a big ramp. I go where the work is. We maintain almost 100 jets so it gets interesting. I have a cover for this so its protecting from "life"...

That's what I earn my keep with.. Avionics doesn't require a lot of big tools. Mainly your normal size hand tools. We use 1/4" drive sockets/ratchets... I use my screwdrivers, pliers, and pen the most [emoji6]

TBird: you can post more of those kind of pictures and as often as you wish. those are awesome. i was lucky enough to see many years of the Blue Angels perform up here in Seattle and i'm sure your guys are just as amazing.

did you get any of Gramps old tools and care to share a few pictures of them? how much fun is it to work on those shiny jets or is it just a job?

Also we won't bite so feel free to post more and if you learn something from a thread maybe a thanks or well done might help those that do post a lot know that somebody is reading or caring about what we write.

cheers and welcome again.

My Snap On driver suggested this box. The top is good to set stuff on. It's durable but the box is tall so I wouldn't want to use it as a bench. For what I need it's perfect. You have to remove the cover completely to get into the box, which is kind of pain but it is what it is. I see this box less than a handful
of times a day

My dad was not very mechanically inclined. He knew the basics but I learned a lot from my grandpa working on farm equipment. I think my grandpa farmed so he could fix stuff. My dad knew I loved wrenching so he surrounded me with folks that he knew would mentor me well. I knew how to tear apart equipment by time I was 10. I could weld by time I was 12... I had a passion for tools and fixing whatever... I have worked on everything from tractors, trucks, semi's, construction equipment, to fighter jets now corporate jets. I still have the passion for what I do but as I have gotten older my body is starting to diminish. Anyone who has turned wrenches for a living will probably say the same. I loved working on F-16's, especially the Thunderbirds but unfortunately no matter how much you love to do something, if you eat and breathe your job, someday you may lose the drive. It was an amazing experience to see my name on a red, white, and blue jet. It requires a lot of time and fortunately my wife supported me while I lived with my jet...as far as my grandpa's tools, as I joined the military I left home. He then passed away shortly after that and his tools were passed onto my cousins. My grandpa never focused on any certain brands, just what worked and what he could afford. He had an old cool snap on chest, that was his prized tool possession....

That's why I really love this forum, because there are so many different folks on this site. Some professionals and some folks that enjoy working on whatever on the weekends. There are many opinions on what the best tools are out there and how many tools you should own. We all can see and learn from each other. It's a good free education

I know what you mean. I have an A&P as well. I started at Pratt & Whitney working on the V2500. I was always surprised at how small the tools we used were. Mostly we just installed clip points for tubes and harnesses...... pretty much 70% of our day their.

The A&P's I work with are a combination of old and young heads. The "old" heads have big boxes with every tool you could imagine. The "young" heads have minimal stuff, trying to build their arsenal as they grow... Having the right tool for the job isn't just a catchy saying, it's the truth. Ask any technician, if it is a plumber or a jet mechanic, they will all say it's true.. I don't think most folks realize how much a person with a trade job invests in tooling..

TBird: i sold gym equipment for the last maybe 10 years after retiring from 30 years selling Real Estate. that said i couldn't help but learn a few healthy things so at almost 60 i'm in pretty decent shape except for a few extra pounds which i'm on a quest to lose.

the reason i'm bringing it up is i was playing professional golf and trying to build up my forearms by punching a BOB that is a half a body that is pretty hard. well it was 30 degrees in my garage gym one day and sweating i didn't realize i hadn't taped up and sprained both wrists. now you probably know it's hard enough to lift anything much less play golf so i was looking for answers.

sorry this is going on so long, but wanted to mention an almost toy like gyro one of my golf students handed me and i was hooked. it had a great action and even though i was in pain for the first few minutes using it i worked up to at least an hour a day for 90 days. To let you know how much my wrists improved i was squeezing those heavy spring Captains of Crush grips sold at www.ironmind.com to test my results. with two sprained wrists i was barely closing the T (Trainer 100 pounds of pressure to squeeze shut) and in 90 days i closed a #2.5 that i think is 225 pounds and almost closed a #3.

wrenching and ratcheting was the worst for me because i also had tennis elbow and since I've used the gyro i rarely have a sore day and i lift a lot of heavy stuff. the only US made gyros i know of are www.dynaflexpro.com and they have the gamer on special last time i checked because it used to be $80. you can get cheaper ones for in the $25 range but if you use one a lot you'll like the better built plastic ones or maybe the German made metal ones that are quieter. i bet your pilots will love using them too if they don't already.

i hate to hear of anybody in pain if i know of a solution. for any back or shoulder issues i use my inversion table by Teeter Ups for 5 minutes a day and i actually had a half a bottle of advil expire about 7 years ago.

cheers and yes we like your awesome pictures and we'd love more if you have any. here's a plane i saw the other day while eating lunch that grabbed my eye along with the 1/2 truck trailer. and old couple jumped out and started getting it ready to fly.

do you fly those jets or just keep them in the air?

TBird: do your guys fly with the Blue Angels or are they like say Michigan and Ohio State football players that don't like the other team much?

in any case the Blue Angels are flying about 20 minutes from my house today so i might just try to catch the show from a hill close by during lunch.

cheers

In the beginning of the year, the Thunderbirds along with the "Blues" and the Army Golden knights attend an airshow conference to set up the airshow schedule for the year. Private performers also attend. There is an agreement that the blue Angels and Thunderbirds don't perform at the same airshow together. They do once a year get together and perform at the same site. It's like a reunion for the teams. But normally they perform different places at the same time so they don't take away for each other's performance. The Blues are known for performing a better show but they don't follow the FAA rules like the Thunderbirds. At least not all of them. And yes I maintain the jets. I have all my life. I am avionics by trade. I was in charge of my own Thunderbird jet on the 2005-2006 team

Tbird: i can't remember if you said already, but are you a pilot and do you get to fly the planes you work on?

amazing way to have to spend a few hours at work I'd say. keep the cool pics coming and maybe i will be digging dirt in my back yard or organizing my garage and won't have time to comment on each one. still are amazing machines and thanks for sharing.

cheers

Hello and welcome from Ohio! Great pictures. Little older than you as I was in the Navy in '66 and onboard the USS FD Roosevelt CVA 42 at the time. Loved to watch flight ops and was reall exciting as a young man of 20 yo to be exposed to the A4 Shyhawks and F4 Phantoms. Loved it

TBird: not sure if you are still around posting or just reading all the informative threads. it would be very cool if you started a thread with all your knowledge of these cool old and new planes. if you do can you put a link to your thread in your signature in your GJ profile so others can find it when you post on other threads?

hope all is well in your world and if you don't want to start a thread yet how about a few more pictures on this intro thread?

Heaty: i bet the guys in show your toolbox thread might be able to help you so make your post there in general tools. good luck
