Hello,

I wanted to say hello to the other garage dwellers. I am new to the site, but upon visting as a guest I knew I had found another home.

As my wife and I recently bought a new house with two garages, I am in a wonderland of sorts. At the same time as moving in, we had our first child, and now time to get the garages in proper working order is progessing as quickly as I would have liked.

I would love to post pictures, but I have not figured how yet.

I also have a question for all of you other junkies.

Since I have been sifting through the site, I have seen several pictures and descriptions of garages and I have not found one (yet) that has a garage doing double duty. My second garage has to house both my vehicle and woodworking hobbies. Does anyone else have to make second garage work twice as hard, and how did they set it up?

Welcome aboard, and congrats on everything you have going on. You must feel like a KING right now.

I use my garage for my cars and hobbies. But most of my tools are small and fit in shelves and tool chests. I have a couple fold-up tables and saw-horses/plywood for work surfaces. Everything large is on casters to put nicely aside when I need to bring the cars in. All of my larger tools (lathe, drill press, sander, chop saw) sit on a stainless table (on casters) when not in use. I just re-arrange them around on the table when I'm using them.
Casters will become your best friend.
I also put up a wall of wire shelves for hand power tools, paint, oil, things that I need steady access to.

Don't forget to make room for a TV and fridge!!!

Welcome!!!. I am able to split my shop between the basement and my soon to be finished garage. I am still on the fence as to what tools i'll keep where and I suspect it will be an on-going dilema for me.

I'm working on the same thing, except my garage will be primarily workshop (both wood and metal) and the occasional vehicle pulled in for working on it. I'm building a small addition to my garage so I can wheel the equipment I'm not using into the "storage" area.

If you will be using the garage for vehicle storage and woodworking, there are a few things to do - probably obvious, but I'll state them anyway.

1. Use the vertical space. Store things overhead whenever possible.
2. Use hose and cord reels when possible.
3. Put all big equipment on wheels.
4. Use a wall for lumber storage - hug the wall as close as possible.
5. Only keep enough material on hand for current projects.

I'm sure there are other idea, that's a couple off the top of my head.
