Hi all,

I recently joined and have really enjoyed reading all the posts. I am looking for ideas to outfit my new 24x36 shop that came with the house we bought last summer. I think my first project will be the workbench. I like how some members have built workbenches by placing a work top over cabinets or tool boxes.

I am looking for suggestions for which cabinets to use, and where to find them.

Thanks, Mike

Mike: Costco sold these metal framed butcher block workbenches for a few years and Gladiator still sells them and probably always did. i had some metal file drawers and they just fit under the bench and i had a picture handy so maybe this is what you are talking about.

another member found some metal cabinets on Craigslist and also found these big timbers and made a pretty nice L shaped bench with a 3.5 inch wood top. Jeremy has a thread with him making this bench in the garage gallery named Hodgepodge garage if you want to see how he made it.

welcome to the group and there are lots of ideas and pictures of what others have done and maybe post up a few pictures of ones you found or your garage to add a little color to this thread.

good luck

Welcome to GJ! You could look for some heavy duty two drawer file cabinets, they will work well. A lot of people are using HF toolboxes as well. Depends on the budget I guess.

Thanks all, I appreciate all the ideas! I have been eying the 44" HF cabinets, one on each end of the workbench. Also, I have been trolling the sites that sell the reconditioned Vidmar and Lista cabinets. Just gathering information for now.

I kind of went crazy a couple years ago, and bought a bunch of the steel Edsal shelving you can find in Lowe's and other places, and have quite a few of those in the shop and garage.

I will post some pics of where I am this weekend.

Thanks

That edsal shelving is pretty good stuff. I have a bunch myself. The HF 44s are really a great choice IMO and I am sure a lot of members would agree. They are probably the best bang for your buck. You may be able to find used cabinets on craigslist as well. I have had pretty good luck myself. Looking forward to some pictures.
