Hello, first post here. Been lurking for a while researching Wilton vices. Snagged my grandfathers old vice this last weekend, its a 4.5" Wilton Bullet. Its funny as I look at all my dad's tools, I can always tell which ones came from my grandfather, as they are the ones splattered with paint :)

I originally thought I would need a new handle, as this one was pretty dinged up and bent, but wet sanding with 400 paper removed the high spots from the dings, and I did manage to straighten it a bit, so its usable as is I think. Bottom of slide has an 11-45 stamped in it. From my research, I think this is an early model? Planning on soda blasting body. Jaw moves in and out fine, so not sure I really need to remove the nut, thinking I can de-grease with kerosene, and then re-lube. Please correct me if I'm going about refurbishing this the wrong way. This is a great forum by the way.

Nice! Great way to acquire a vise and for it to be a little special too. I agree though it will look better spruced up a bit. I'll let the experts chime in on the best plan of attack on the restore.

Welcome to the board!

Looks mostly dirty. I'd use a coarse cup wheel on my angle grinder. It will clean up nicely.

Mostly just paint. Got most of it off today with a wire wheel, will finish it up with a soda blaster later this week. I'm a little surprised at just how rough the casting is on this vice. Big blobs of metal hanging on in places, one the size of a small pea got knocked off with the wire wheel. Is this normal with these old Wiltons?

Assuming it's a 1945, the war production was the excuse to let finish quality slide and we never got it back.
