Just wanted to post that today I ordered my first welder a new Millermatic 211. I could not resist the $400 rebate, and the free spool gun. I am waiting to pick everything up at once so I won't take delivery for approx. 3 weeks as I am waiting for one big package that was backordered. That will just give more time to continues getting the garage ready.

More importantly as others have been wondering is Miller coming out with a new inverter model?
While ordering my welder today the LWS personnel told me that Miller has a new 211 inverter model, and they were actually taking preorders. I believe it will be available in August.
I don't understand why, but they didn't have a price readily available, and I can't imagine any rebates with a new model. I asked is it a multi process welder like the Lincoln 210 MP, but was told it's simply a 211 inverter model.
Apparently that's the underlying reason for the current program to clear out the transformer model.

I'm looking to get into welding and buy my first set up as well. was thinking either a miller 141 or a lincoln 210, per a recommendation from a popular mechanics article. but the 211 also looks like a great unit. just curious where did you get it from ,straight from the company for the rebate and spool gun?

can anyone elaborate more on what the transformer vs inverter models mean?
really interested in this thread, hope some more knowledgable people chime in. I've always wanted to learn to weld.

I have a 140 Hobart. It's a great machine. However, when the $$$ become available, it'll be sold and I'll buy a 210 MVP. If you are going to keep a welder a while, get a 120/240V 2xx type model first, then you likely won't ever have to re-purchase. I got mine cheap on a special discount/sale/etc perfect storm but should have waited and got the bigger model.

413dan I bought mine from an authorized Miller dealer. Purchases from the Miller on line store do not qualify for the rebate. Also the rebate for the machine only purchase or full price for the machine and $400 rebate last until Dec 2015, but the free spool gun with the 211 is only until July 31, 2015. If you go to Miller.com there is a place to plug in your zip code and locate the Miller dealers.

Not an expert on transformer verses inverter models, but since nobody has chimed in I will tell you as I understand it.
The transformer models use a heavy transformer to drive the unit current, but the inverter models use electronics to achieve the same effect, coupled with digital readouts. The inverter models therefore weigh much less than the transformer models. Some inverter models such as the Lincoln 210 MP can do MIG, TIG, and stick welding. The 210 MP comes equipped to do MIG, but requires purchasing additional equipment to do TIG, not sure about the stick.

Since my unit will most likely live it's life rolling around the garage on a cart weight was not a big factor, and was easily out weighed (no pun intended) by the generous rebate, and free spool gun.

My guess is that the new Miller inverter 211 will not have rebates for some time.

Hope that helps.

Transformer is the "old school". Heavy. As the name says, uses a transformer to turn your power input into your welding output. They tend to be very reliable.

Inverter- uses electronics to do the same thing as a transformer in a lighter, smaller package. If you need a big punch in a small package or if you are going to be hauling your welder around with you (like in a ship) then you would want to look at an inverter. Tends to be more expensive. Some would say doesn't have quite the reliability record of a transformer machine but they see plenty of use in the industrial world, and are a lot lighter and tend to have more features.

I was talking to my rep today regarding new vs old 211. The new 211 will be smaller and lighter. Performance wise from what he has seen, duty cycle and overall capabilities will be the same. So based on what he has seen, unless you want the smaller lightweight package for portability, the old 211 is still a very option.

I just contacted a local authorized a miller dealer and he quoted a price of $959.00 minus a $200 rebate and a $260 spool gun. However per this rebate info:

http://www.millerwelds.com/products/mig/product.php?model=M00245

I have to get my acetylene tank filled up and will look into this. $959 minus $400 rebate would put me at $559 for a 211 and a free spool gun. If so, I'll be leaving with a 211 tonight.

I was quoted $1,250 plus tax for Miller 211 and a cart good thru 8/13/2015. Send in the $200 rebate which would put me at $1,050 for a Miller 211 and cart. If I pull the trigger by 7/31/2015 I get the bonus offer spoolmate 100, which they said was about $200 retail.

Hell of a deal but stuck on pulling the trigger on this or an Armalite AR-15, which I'd probably get more use out of the welder,

Grab the Miller first. Get the AR later- the market is so saturated with ARs you can get a great deal on one every day of the week.

That $400 rebate requires buying $400 worth of other welding stuff from Miller. If they've got $400 worth of stuff you need/want, then you're golden, but you'll still be out of pocket $1,359 (+ tax), then you'll get your rebates.

Yup, I love my guns, but that's a deal you won't come across again most likely.
And you can always piece together a great AR (better then most off the shelf AR's) for well under $1k and you can do that part by part which can be easier for someone on a tight budget.

Thanks Smalltown! I just ordered the 211 with the $200 rebate and free spool gun. I've wanted to learn MIG welding for a long time and now I'll have a great machine to start off with. The ability to weld aluminum is a nice plus too.

I'm placing my order either tomorrow or this weekend. The deal for the spool gun ends the end of this month. My brother is with Swat and his AR is decked out and upgraded with all the goodies. An AR are a dime a dozen and can be had anytime and a deal like this doesn't come around often.

Ordered the 211 last night from Cyberweld. They get great reviews. I bought it with the cart and will use the $200 rebate and also get the free spool gun. Pulled the trigger (no pun intended) for the spool gun.

Order placed with local authorized Miller dealer with item number 951651. I purchased the 211 and service cart. Unfortunately the dealer sold their last 211 unit last night and he contacted Miller and my unit should be there Monday.

I ended up with the newer Millermatic 211 smaller model with the inverter. Ive so far just used it to weld up some exhaust. But I love it so far, time will tell. I used to weld with the older transformer model at work been holding up for years. Hope this one does the same. I like the fact of being able to us 110 or 220. Miller makes a really good product. Wish they would at least put a better clamp on it.
