New Milwaukee Tool Seen at SEMA

I've been waiting for this ever since they introduced their 3" cut off tool. In the Milwaukee booth they have both a 3/8" X 13 and a 1/2" X 18 inch M12 Band Files. Bodymen of the world rejoice! Strike fear into the hearts of spot welds everywhere.

That is good, there have been very limited options for electric versions. Now I can get my mate to buy one, he uses milwaukee and if he ever actually works on his car he then won't need to borrow my air one.

I was an early adopter of the conversion from the Milwaukee m12 cut off tool to a band file using the Harbor Freight Air band file parts. It has become one of my most used tools.

I've since purchased the HF "Baxter" brand 1/2" x 18" air band file and it is awesome as well. I would definitely welcome an 1/2" x 18" electric version.

Edit: It looks like PTR got their hands on some marketing photos from milwaukee.

I hope they left enough clearance for a scotch bright belt. It's heartbreaking that my not so cheap Dynabrade doesn't, but my cheap HF electric does.

I ordered a few of the Scotch Brite bands from a recent Benchmark Abrasives sale but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. I hope they last longer than the equivalent pad on a die grinder because they're not cheap.

I was going to do a cut off wheel conversion but for the price bought an inexpensive Ryobi one. Ryobi works ok.

This one looks really nice but pricey.

I've never heard them called a "band file". lol. I've always called this type of tool a miniature belt sander, or handheld belt sander. I clicked the link above and the pictures show the tool being used with a sanding belt. What part of this tool is a "file"? Just curious. Or is that just marketing BS?

Makita calls them "Detail Belt Sanders" but they must use "band file" as a keyword for internet searches.
What are you guys using them for?

In autobody they are used to remove spot welds but they are great for many purposes. The reason they have taken over in autobody is the use of high strength steels make conventional spot weld bits dull quickly. These tools are much faster and last far longer for removing spot welds. They work great on welds of any kind where you can't fit a flap disc.

I use them for all manner of weld prep where I can't get a roloc disc on a die grinder. Just the other day I used my longer one to remove the weld seam from inside some 2" x 3/16 square tubing. Worked like a charm.

I also use them for deburring stuff that's too big, awkward, or unable to be deburred by my belt sander.

Band files are great, but the belts aren't cheap ! Drill or grind is much cheaper !

Not really, you just have to know where to buy them. Spot weld bits aren't cheap either. I knew I could depend on you Wizard to bring cost into the equation.
