Hey all,

Tl;dr- I'm new, not a bot, and is Mr. Cool DIY worth it? Depends... Do you know any HVAC people that can comission your system for cheap?

I'm brand new to the forum, been on car forums for a decade and someone recently suggested this forum since I just moved and have to rebuild another garage from scratch.

I pulled the trigger on a 24K BTU diy Mr cool before closing and even finding this forum. My previous garage, I had an 18k gree ceiling cassette. New garage is 600sqft and old garage was 700 sqft. Only put 2 years into my old garage.

I want to post this since I started reading a ton on this forum about people feeling skeptical about the Mr cool and thinking it was internal marketing or bots. I want to give my initial impressions and comparrisons. Also, want to build some rep, because I need help building my new garage man cave. Target budget is 10K for the new cave, but I could never make it as a project manager ;).

So, down and dirty for comparison... Loved the gree unit being ceiling mounted and I was able to install it centrally in the garage, which helped with evening out the overall garage temp. I finished the rest of the garage by putting rockwool in and slatwall up the majority of spaces except for the garage door wall. It was SUPER quiet and could keep temps 30 degrees below ambient for cooling, that's without any ceiling insulation, 10.5 ft ceilings 700sqft. It heated very well... When it was in the teens and cranked up, it would be 60's at standing level. I'd get on a ladder, and break a sweat. I also vapor barriered the wall portion that wasn't previously finished, and after another 80 hours of research, realize I should not have for my area due to being central Midwest (won't even get into that rabbit hole). I did the pink panther insulation kit for the garage doors.

Onto the Mr. cool DIY...

I chose this one due to the DIY aspect.... I knew an HVAC guy that commissioned my old system, but it cost me a couple hundred bucks and took him MONTHS to get to it. He actually finally got it going Christmas Eve. Anyway... I also ended up saving $500 or so going with the upsized 24K BTU unit that's diy since ceiling cassettes cost a premium, plus HVAC commision costs and a longer lineset. To me, I thought I'd take the risk for the savings since I have to epoxy, garage cabinets, insulate, and slatwall this new construction skeleton.

So, finally got it in the other day, and man this thing kicks some air. I had some contractors doing other work and showed it off. We stood outside the garage and could feel the blast of cold air from 22+ft away. It was able to cool 30 degrees below ambient, which was impressive since I had approximately 100 sqft of wall space uninsulated and no attic insulation. Also 10.5 ft ceilings, but I do have thermacore 9.6ish R value garage doors. Oh, I almost forgot, I stripped that stupid white cover off the lineset. It added 3x bulkiness and made it impossible to manage and wrap. The stainless hose portion for the big line was super easy to manage after that and the small line is actually two tiny copper lines, which seemed strange to me, but was easily coiled as well. I plan to cone back and insulate plus exterior lineset cover.

I will say that the WiFi app was a bonus that I didn't even know about when I bought it. I read all the reviews later and was expecting to be pissed off trying to set it up. I spent about 1.5 hours retrying, failure after failure on my Android. Took 4 tries in my fiance's iPhone. I read a review that said to turn your mobile data off, and boom, took 4 tries on my a Droid to set it up. I thought it was strange that there's separate accounts for Android vs. iPhone. Android app is a little nicer. It had been super convenient to start the minisplit a. Hour before I get home since I'm in the middle of a full overhaul.

WHEW! Sorry for the book and poor grammar/sentence structure folks. I'm a perfectionist at heart and didn't want to spend 2 hours writing this, plus my Android auto correct seems to be on crack lately.

I just hate reading g reviews and not understanding the details of people's applications so I know how it will compare to mine. Any questions, please ask away. I'll add some thinks to Google albums for my old garage and progress on the new garage. Lots of pics, enjoy.

P.S... I tored the builders junk out. Was pretty disappointed at the insulation job that you can. See from the pictures. Also, the floor is cracking and there is about 200sqft of hollow sound, and I'm wondering if I should mudjsck before doing epoxy.

P.s.s... can't post links till 5 messages in, so let's get the dialog rolling

Just reread through half my post And thought I would mention... The wall mount unit is in my third bay kickout so I could go directly outdoors with my lineset and drain. I definitely notice a difference with the third bay area being much cooler since the air is blasting against the garage door. I thought about adding a fan to circulate, but my goal is to put a completely retractable golf emulator in the two bay and my fiance gets cold if it's under 80. So, I figure I can pound a few, get sweaty, and step away to let her go at it without her getting too chilled.

I have the same one, I love it and the install was super easy. I routed my lines up to the attic and then out the eve to the unit. The excess is in the attic, its in the main bay I work in but the whole garage is much better to be in.

I thought about doing that and putting the unit over my work bench and running a condensate drain through the wall to the basement drain, but didn't want a potential issue if the condensate line leaked or anything. Would have been nice to put the extra lineset coiled in the garage attic.
