I made one with a fairly large cup and a 2" magnet on a long bolt. It is a failure, while the magnet holds it on tightly it just doesn't have enough grip on the filter and just spins instead of unthreading the filter.

I think it's a variation on a theme. I forget the name of the one the shop had but it had a short 3/8 drive extension through the bottom of the container portion that allowed it to be used with an end cap oil filter wrench.

You know that thread that asked why channel locks weren't good enough for changing a filter? These little contraptions are even worse for trying to get into those tight spots! I hate getting oil all over my hand so I have started wearing a nitrile rubber glove on the hand that's doing the work once the filter is broken loose. Same for the drain plug. It's a neat idea but I don't see it being very useful for the vehicles I work on.

Since I seldom change my oil while wearing a tuxedo I'd not buy one and consider it another gimmick tool.
Kind of a nice idea but I think once the tool is soiled it wouldn't grip the filter well so you'd need to squeeze it quite hard, perhaps enough to squish out the oil it is intended to catch. NOBODY is going to want to clean this thing.
You asked.
EDIT: I had an oil change hours after the above posting and was thinking of this device. My procedure is; loosen the vertically mounted filter until oil begins running out over the top of the filter into the drain. WAIT a few moments for it to stop, unscrew the remaining turns and dispose of it. No muss, no fuss. I just don't see the need for this.
Maybe it will sell but I suspect most will wind up in the back of a drawer.

Neat concept but wouldn't work on a single vehicle or piece of equipment I currently own.

This. Trying to figure out a use case in my world where this beats a nitrile glove and coming up blank.

Interesting concept but fit and finish seem very much in the prototype stage. Cool that it squishes over multiple sizes but I feel like the squishiness might not make for the best grip and cleaning could be difficult. Price is pretty reasonable, so that's a plus.

I would like to pick up one of these KTC models eventually (except my filter is currently mounted sideways):

I hope he does well!

As other pointed out, it is a variation of a theme. I have something similar from about 30 years ago, the one downside of the one I have is that it gets too hot to hold when hot oils fall in there, and you can’t let it go without making a mess. The magnet trick from above may help if you have to let go.

I think some of you guys are under the impression that this is an oil filter wrench. It’s not, it’s just to spin the filter off and catch the spillage. I wear nitrile gloves usually when changing oil but I always seem to get it running down my arm and some on the floor. this thing should help prevent that, I ordered one to try.

Anyway, I thought it was a neat idea and I’m proud of him for trying to market them. Most people get an idea of something useful and never go any further.

I saw something similar recently and thought it was a good idea. Because I too have had oil run down my arm when not careful on vertically mounted filters.

If you're doing a few oil changes a day, I can see the value in this if it works once it's seen oil exposure. But for home use for me, it'd take me more time to clean it than it would to clean my arm. I guess the answer is to put it in a ziplock bag...

Anyway, good idea, hopefully it works well.

Why not just put the ziplock bag over the filter and skip the silicone toy?
