I have a new cl find: It's a model #103-24811 drill press with a Vary-Slo and a rotary milling vise. It seams to be in beautiful condition except that the motor ( a Westinghouse 1/3 h p) won't start without disconnecting the belt and spinning the pulley. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I second the motion for pictures!

You best solution may be to track down an old Craftsman or other 1/2hp motor. They are fairly common and generally fairly cheap. Otherwise I agree, if it works when you manually spin it, most likely it is the capacitor. It is a little bit odd however that you have to remove the belt. If it were just the capacitor it should work either way, if you manually spin it. Sounds like you may also have issues with old belts, lubrication, and / or adjustment. The Vari-Slo can be a bit fussy.

To be honest I haven't tried to start the motor on the drill press, When I bought it I was told that it didn't run so I have just the motor on my work bench. I will have to find out how to test the capacitor ! Thanks

Thank you Scimonetti, your suggestion that the problem was the start capacitor was spot on. Now it runs like a champ  Now I'll have to start thinking about buying some new belts, the old ones are kind of crusty. I cant believe how lucky I was to get this drill press its in very nice original condition.

Great to hear you got it running. Sounds like you were fortunate with the capacitor. Sometimes with the older motors it is hard to find a new one that will fit.

Consider a link belt if it will be sitting long times between uses. Link bells don't take a form like a regular belt so over time they will remain smoother operating

I have a link belt on my late 40's 100 floor model that I'm happy with but I wonder how much extra slip two more will give with the vari-slo. Another concern I have is how critical is belt length for the front two belts. Comments and information are appreciated. Thanks

Yes it is, I also have the vise that mounts on the rotary table. I wont be messing around with this Drill Press, it's a nice survivor.

I found another Craftsman 100 Drill Press on CL with a Vary-slo ! The Drill Press is in nice original condition with the exception of the motor witch is totally wrong but worked. I have replaced the incorrect motor with a nice Craftsman 1/2 HP 1750 RPM motor dated 1947 so its right in line with the vintage of the Drill Press. As I get it cleaned up Ill post some more pictures.
