Hey...sounds like you have it about ready to get "naked". You might try doubling up some Duct Tape on your lettering. When all is said and done you can just wipe it with Acetone to get rid of the tape residue. 3M pad should work a treat....I use a Scotchbrite to wipe the slide paths on the main body after painting. Make sure to leave your swivel jaw in place so you don't rough up the machined swivel jaw surfaces. I don't remember if you got your jaw to move or not. Good Luck!

I have not been able to get the pin out of the jaw yet........I decided to go ahead and blast it with the jaw still attached. I will try to find some tape to put on the slides. Hopefully all goes well, and tonight it will be as bare as the day it was born.......

Anyone just clear-coat their vises? Depending on how the bare metal looks, I thought this may be an interesting option.

I tried to drill and insert a self tapping screw, but that failed, I think I may just have to drill it out......Or get a bolt-out and try to put some torque on it with an impact wrench.....I am just about out of idea......

It looks very nice and bare. Don't worry, the pin will come out eventually. Just use care since you are dealing with 100 years of "can't replace it" metal. LOL

Update!
I got the pin out today at lunch!!!!!! Had to sacrifice a little, avert your eyes if you cannot stand the sight of vise desecration.........

Drilled a hole in the bottom, up through the dovetail, to allow a drive pin to slip in through the bottom.

A few hammer taps (bangs....) later, and voila:

I am planning on cleaning up the original jaws, plus making some replacement aluminum and copper jaws. Found a sweet piece of 1/2" copper for some soft jaws!!!!

Okay, so I have been trying to think of a way to make jaws for this vise. My plan is to either have the steel or aluminum jaws on all the time, but be able to slip the copper ones over top of either.
The easiest thing to do would be to drill and tap both the al and steel jaws for screws from the copper jaws, but I don't really want to have threaded holes in the face of the jaw that could potentially get messed up....
So I was thinking of drilling and threading holes on the ends of the jaws, and adding some tab to the copper that would allow it to wrap around and secure to the sides of the jaws.

Okay, so I have been trying to think of a way to make jaws for this vise.

It looks like you have sizable bar of copper handy, so why not just make a solid copper soft jaw? Or use nylon or brass. Make the face thick enough so you can counterbore the mounting screws away from harm. It only takes a minute to change them out when you need them.

Of course the best method is to leave the soft jaws in the Prentiss vise for more delicate stuff, and have another vise for more manly jobs. I sure wouldn't want to bang too hard on that swivel jaw for risk of breaking it.

Drilling a hole into the side of the jaws is a good idea, then all you need is just a pin to hold the copper jaws in place. If you don't plan on using the soft jaws that much, you probably don't need the inserts to be secured to the aluminum or steel jaws, just use the clamping pressure to hold them there when needed.

Since it didn't turn out to be original, he'll need one of these (the one on the right is the original I copied from my Prentiss 19 1/2).

Started cleaning the swivel ways up. They were pretty coroded, but I was able to sand and file it back to shiny:

Then I gave it a coat of primer:

Going to paint it with rustoleum hammered silver, to match my tool cabinet. Hopefully painting it tonight if the weather cooperates.....

I guess it has been a month since my last update......wow.....

I have the vise almost all the way complete. I need to clean up the aluminum jaws still. But, enough talk, here are the pics:

I will post some more pics of the jaws later. They are the original jaws that were on th vise, just ground and re-grooved. I also modified the countersinks to accomodate generic screws.

Wow, I bet that thing only goes on for 100 years give or take a decade!
