I am in the market for a 60 gallon air compressor. I can get one from HD or Lowes for 489 plus tax, can use a HF 20% coupon at either one for a total of 430.00. Can buy a used Kobalt for 385 that is a yr old, won't buy it unless he comes down to 325 or so. I have a 15 gallon oil less air compressor I am hoping I can get at least 100.00 for to get some of my money back. So here is my question, should I buy new or used? New I get a 3 yr factory warranty, and can buy an additional 2-3 yr warranty. Used I get nothing other than the compressor. I am not going to use the compressor a lot, mainly used for etching the stainless steel cup everyone uses now, WWGJD (What Would Garage Journal Do)????

I would keep shopping. It looks like there are a number of viable options on the Nashville craigslist in the $500 range that will likely kick the **** out of a HD special

A couple months ago, I bought a new 60 gallon Sanborn at Menards for less than $400. Made in USA. My last 60 gal Sanborn ran for 40 years before the tank rusted out. My fault.

Interesting, the assumption that something used, never is worn out and is always In perfect working condition. No one would ever be dumping one.

One CL link posted a compressor that had a 3-phase motor.

The OP just wanted an air compressor. U.S. or China, both seem to be ok. If they don't last 40 years, who cares?

I bought the Lowes 60 gallon compressor about 3 years ago. It works well.

What do you want to do, work on an air compressor or work with tools powered by air.....

Where the used stuff might be worth while is if you need a lot of air and can find a deal on a large industrial unit for much less than a comparable new compressor.....

I bought a 60 gallon Porter Cable from Tractor Supply yesterday for $386 + tax. They currently have them marked down from $489 to $429. I got a coupon for an additional 10% in the mail and BAM! $386. Best deal I have found on a compressor in a while.

Hey thanks, I'll check them out. Now if only I could find a coupon.

I'm have a 350-400 dollar budget. So that's leading my direction.

That might be your budget right now but if you spread the cost out over a few months, could you afford more ? You mention HD, do you have a HD card ? If so, spend $299 or more and get it interest free for 6 months ?

I found a clean 60 gallon tank for $20 with a blown compressor (oiless Craftsman)

All I did was move the motor and pump from my $50 Craftsman 20 gallon compressor to the big tank.

There are good deals out there, as proved by all the "you ****" threads on this site.

My $70 compressor works great, and will last for years.
