When my addition was built I had two Midwest brand surface boxes installed on the outside. They have GFI outlets in them. The plan was/is to tap off the bottom of the Midwest box with PVC conduit -- going underground -- run 120v to outlets in the new flower beds.
The one side I need two outlets on either side of a set of new stone steps -- so my plan was 3/4 out of the midwest and into the first and then to the second. I only need 3 12g wires for that. I had a 1" Carlon line buried when the steps were built.
The other I need 4 12g -- as I want to go into an outlet and after down to a now not functional lamp post (the line was cut when the addition was built). That Midwest box has two outlets -- one is switched from inside the addition.
My plan was to use Carlon -- single outlet box w/ in use cover at each location -- the kind with two taps on the bottom for gluing conduit
Questions:
1. How high do I have to place the outlets above the mulch line -- I'm assuming I also need a box support -- at least more than the two 3/4 lines will provide. I could put a 4x4 in the ground .. but I would like it to be less noticeable.
2. I was told this only has to be 8" deep as it's GFI protected .... But what if I wanted to run part of it along the foundation .. can that be done at ground level if it's attached ?
3. Is 3/4 OK for the 4 12g wires -- using the 3/4 I can come right off the Midwest box -- if I used 1" it hits the bottom trim at the freeze board on the addition. The line feeding the Midwest boxes is 12g 20amp. I was planning on 12g stranded -- that's what was installed when all the other outside electric was done years ago. We used crimped lugs to the outlets. What's the preferred way today?
This is the box on the addition - w/o that top hole.
