I recently discovered that I really needed a drill press, and I'd had my eye on a small arbor press for some time. So when my brother gave me a grinder for my birthday, I knew I had to find a way to store, and use, all these tools.
I didn't want to sacrifice any of the counter space for any of them, so of course, the only solution was to make a custom table to mount them on.
Apologies in advance for the dirty floor- this is a working garage (or so I tell myself when I don't have time to clean everything when I want to).
I made the table up using the same basic design as one I'd made earlier for the brake/shear/roll I have for small sheetmetal projects. This one is a little taller, and has a flat top.
I welded a 4-outlet box underneath, and wired a former extension cord to power it. I fabbed and welded cord wraps underneath so they wouldn't snag or take more room when the table was stored against a wall.
The entire table structure was made from 1.25 X 2" square steel tubing, welded up using my Lincoln 185 TIG machine. There is a 1/8" steel top which is welded to the rest of the structure; the sheetmetal top is covered by a layer of 1/8" Buna rubber to help make it easier to keep clean, and protect parts.
After the table was finished the welding process, I sent it out to be powdercoated in the same Red Baron red that I use elsewhere in the shop.
Casters make it easy to roll around, and the long electrical cable makes it easy to operate outside on the driveway when I want to minimize dust or swarf in the garage itself.
I'm getting a shelf bent up from some aluminum sheet I had laying around from another project, and I'll store the drill press vises, some arbor accessories, etc on it. It will be mounted on the cross bar where the legs are tied together.
It's not finished completely, but it works well so far.
