Well, I've been waiting to start this project for a long time.

As I told in other thread we don't have here a good supply of tool boxes. There are a few, but some are too expensive and the other kind are ****.

You can see the first cabinet I made from an old table I used as a bench, that I was going to throw away. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61062

So last week I went to the steel shop and got some tube to start a rolling tool box.

Details on what I am planning to do:

- Three bay style toolbox 70" wide, 23" deep, 43 " tall from the floor to the bench top (including casters)

- one wide 46" top drawer with double ball bearing slides.
- Eight drawers, all of them 20" deep
3 2" tall, 27" wide
2 8" tall, 27" wide

the other bay is formed by 3 drawers 8" tall, 16" wide

- A side door in the right side 18" wide for storing large items.


The las tool box I made it from 16 gauge. I will test how it goes with 18 gauge cause 16 gauge in this size will be too heavy

Casters I found arround here didn't have brake, so I pan to build a brake to avoid movement.

I been thinking of copying a snap on box, be a lot cheaper than the high price they want, only problems I can see are the slides

well, being honest, I took the idea from a snap on model... not the exact model cause I adapted it to the metric system. The slides are not a problem. In the first toolbox I made I used ball slides but the only I could found were made in china...not bad, but when i loaded the drawers with a lot of tools they tend to twist a little.
Now I found a brand named Ducasse, that are prety cheap here, they are heavy constructed (tonight will post pics.) There is another brand here, named Haffele, made in Germany. They are a little bit more expensive than the ones I purchased, but IMHO are same quality. They cost around 7 bucks for a pair.

My original budget is arround 900 buks. It may be a bit expensive, but as I told before, ther is no way I can find a similar tool box around here and it should be at least the same quality as a top branded box.

Last saturday I went to the stell shop to order the gauge, bent according to my draws. I order all the stuff in 18 gauge except the structural rails for the slides that were order in 16 gauge. I am testing if 18 gauge is enough rigid after for making drawers. This weekend I will work with that and post some pics of the progress

Pics of what I did today:

Put part of the rails where the slides will be screwed on.
I also got the drawers in .18 gauge to test if they were rigid enough. Test passed, from now on will use gauge .18 in the rest of the tool box.

I also get a new design for the bottom of the drawers front. You can see in the picture that the old design was straight and the new one is bent in the bottom. This gives a better finishing and avoid you can see inside the drawer when it's closed.

A steel shop in town did the bending, according to my drawings. I tacked it together with a very cheap stick welder.

thank you guys, I have to put two more drawers, and a door on the left bay. Don't have time to finish it until the week end.

I doubt about putting crommed pulls all along the drawers. Also have to put a rubber sheet at the bottom of the drawers, to protect the paint.

This is the second box I made, and be sure that the third would have some things different. I'm not a pro builder, but one of my dreams is to own a fabrication shop!!!!

Your tool box is a work of art! With your excellent skills, you should have no problem selling them and starting your own fabrication shop. Thank you for taking the time to post this for us.
