Hello to all - I am posting a few pictures of a new project I have recently started. The piece is a commission for a client that would like a Heron landing atop a palm frond leaf. I thought I would post a few pictures showing the beginning stages of construction. Please feel free to ask any questions or ways I can improve these posts. This is my first and I do want to present the images and information the best way for viewers, so all comments are welcome. Thanx again to all - This is a great site!

Yes... I try to use as much reference so I know that I can control the accuracy as much as I desire for the clients requests and to satisfy my own personal interpretation of the subject matter.

This is for an outdoor setting so that is why I am using Corten steel. The steel will oxidize and form a protective coating which lasts for decades.

Oh yeah... These projects always take me longer than I plan. I am hoping that sometime soon my input into these images will eventually be able to reflect the real time & effort it takes to produce.

Hey - Sorry for not posting for a bit. I am really quite busy now. I'm working on the preliminary wings with thick card stock to get the feel of size and proportion. I've got them (the paper stock wings) taped to the wing round bar. I will post up some pics Saturday.

When not working on the heron, I am learning how to design pieces of steel, cut to correct dimensions with a water jet. I have a program on my iPad that lets me turn my sketches into different files... Takes some time to learn this electronic stuff. Might just go back to my own drawings and work from those.

Nobody has scared me away - it's just with all going on time has been limited. I will try and be more vigilant in my posts, but do look for some new pics tomorrow.

Thanx to all,
Pbhill

Can't wait for the update. Is the waterjet something you bought or are you taking drawings to an outside shop?

Also don't worry about us, get your work done and if you remember to take pictures that's great, if not we still enjoy the updates.

I wish I cold afford a water jet - Those things are absolutely amazing! No, I am taking my drawings to them and they do the cutting. They have one machine for thin metals, gasket materials, etc., but then there is their monster... They showed me a perfectly round circle that they cut out of 3 inch stainless steel - and the circle WAS round and NO edge burrs at all. Whew! That was impressive but so is the cost of the machine. Anyway, that is my plan.

No problem on posting pics. Glad to do so. Thanx Strouty
