New proto socket sets

I was browsing socket sets, because I only have twenty or so that I don't need already, and came across these newer Proto sets in a fairly intuitively blow mold case. Anyone have their hands on one who could share some pictures and thoughts? The case doesn't look fitted so I'd be curious if the sockets stay in their place with the lod closed. I actually greatly prefer NOT fitted 90% of the time because it's so much quicker to grab a socket, but it does speed thing up when one doesn't have to reorganize the whole set before getting to work. It appears the lid is capable of folding underneath which is pretty cool when the set is in a drawer or riding the cart.

That set makes me appreciate my SK set in 1/4" even more. Mine is like the 48 piece set without the two adapters. I gave $200 for it a couple of years ago. The Proto stops at 13mm. I like that my SK goes up to 15mm.

Since most of my work these days is on my three Toyota/Lexus vehicles, I always look for a 14mm -- one won't find 13mm on a Japanese vehicle. This one's a fail for me, Proto.

Agreed with the comments on the SK 1/4" set. I'm a fan of Proto tools but that set seems a bit pricey for what is there.

That is six times what I paid for this "Tekton" set, which contains both metric and SAE, and covers metric from 4mm to 14mm (including 4.5 and 5.5 mm.)
I'm a big fan of "made in U.S.A." when it makes sense and the difference in product quality is really significant.
I'm sorry to say that Proto set fails on both counts.

The entire point of this thread was asking if anyone has it and could provide better pictures. I am well aware of what's out there, and never said this specific link was anything like a deal. I just was hoping for more details. Boogerman was the only one with personal experience, and hard removal is definitely a problem.

I have a 3/8 drive proto set in a similar case. The case is well made and durable. Not as compact as a metal box. But a improvement over the previous generation blow molded. When open the lid makes a convenient tray to hold fasteners as it has a raised edge.

My 2 cents. Mac/Proto sockets are thinner than the others, all drives, and both chrome and impact, this really becomes apparent in the 1/4" drive. This may not mean anything to you, but in my world clearance is everything. Mac/proto also makes the shallowest 1/4" and 3/8” chrome universal swivel sockets.

Good catch. I didn't notice it right away. Is this a set specific for Hex-lok?

Otherwise this does seem very pricey for a set that doesn't include at least a Proto premium pear head or the precision pear head.

Isn't that a dust seal around the edge? Looks like the lid overlaps the case. I'd be very surprised if the sockets didn't stay in place when closed.

Proto sockets, by the way, are not the same thing as Tekton. That doesn't mean the premium Proto commands is worthwhile. I don't think you buy this set because it's a bargain.
