Found an online liquidator and ordered this Record 4" mechanics' vise with 1/2 turn quick release and swivel base.

Since it was $79.99, I was a little worried that somehow I would get an Record/Irwin import, even though this one was listed as one of the last "Made in England" models.

Well, I think I did OK, since when it came, the shipping box was clearly marked "Made in England" and the vise was as well.

I have an older Record woodworkers vise and the paint on my new one is not quite as thick or smooth, but all in all, a nicely made vise supposedly with a lifetime warranty. However, I guess this would be a warranty where it would be replaced with an import if there is ever a problem.

What do you think? They have another one left that my son is interested in getting if everyone thinks this is a good deal.

That's nice. I have a Record #5 that I bought at an auction with the intent of flipping it and making a few bucks. It's so nice, I just can't get myself motivated to sell it. I suppose I should probably just admit defeat and find a place to mount it.

Very nice deal.
Is there any UK Record Vise production left at all now?
They had a pretty wide line years ago but U.S. distribution was iffy in the automotive world.

That sounds like a great deal on a very good vise.

I have 2 of them that I bought back in 2004 that are identical except for a little gold decal on the front. I use the heck out of them.

Great vise. One of the best I've ever used. I have one mounted on my mobile tool cart at work. I can't keep the other guys off the thing. You'll have this one forever and so will your grandson. Great investment

Records are great vises. One of these days, I'll get mine back but for now it resides on dad's bench. Even better, it was made during wartime in 43 while dad was stationed there before going in on D-Day. He thinks they are made for each other....

I think you did well and I'd grab the other one if you still can. I have 4 Record bench vices (Nos. 3, 4, 6 & 8) plus a wood vice and they are great vices.

Out of curiosity, how is the vise attached to the swivel base? I had a 3VS a while back and it while there was a pilot in the center of the swivel base, the cast pilot did not actually bolt to the vise. So the vise was attached to the swivel base only by the clamp screw on one side. Not as strong as I would have preferred. The 3VS was marked "Sheffield, England" , but not "made in England".

Thanks

The swivel base is two separate pieces, consisting of an outside mounting ring and a threaded crossbar. The crossbar can rotate 360 degrees within the mounting ring and is held captive by the mounting ring once it is bolted to the workbench. The vise is bolted via two slots (seen below anvil) to the crossbar.

The crossbar is also labeled "Record" and "Made in England".

Disclaimer: For the COO conspiracy theorists on this board, the ring is suspiciously not marked and since I do not have an actual picture of the English foundry workers casting the ring, I wonder if it is possibly made in some third world country?? :bounce:
