I was at the electrial shop yesterday picking up some stuff and saw this on the counter...so bought it...kinda cool with the expection it is made in China...You can plug your USB charger cable right into it with out the need for the adpt. and still have a plug...just thought I would share thinking it was the perfect garage item.

This would be a good idea for an outlet above a workbench.
For a regular wall outlet, I'd be pissed if I wanted to plug in 2 regular 110V cords, and instead saw those USB ports staring at me.

Problem is they are awfully expensive. More than a regular outlet ($2) and a couple adapters. A lot to pay for convenience. If they were $8 or so, it would suddenly make some sense.

On the other hand, if you need the outlet for other things and would rather not use a strip, these give you an option for your portable devices without taking away a 120 plug. The $15 a piece is worth it for the 2-3 locations around the house where you've got this going on, but you're right, you'd be nuts to replace all of them at this cost. Oh, and since it comes with a cover plate ($0.99), that's $2.99 vs. $15! :)

This is the reason why I don't trust a $600 iPhone and $800 iPad to chinese chargers. I can bet my money on something extremely similar being in the wall outlet.

Wow.. Quite telling!!!

I wonder how many other power supplies / chargers are like that?

Many years ago when Bell Telephone first came out with the Trim-Line phone, I got one installed in my brand new apartment that I moved into a couple days prior. It had a transformer that needed to be plugged into the wall to power the lighted dial on the phone. Transformer was plugged in behind my sofa.
I came home the next day to smoke in my apartment which had actually erupted into a full blown fire. The transformer had shorted out and set the sofa on fire as well as the wall. Most everything in the apartment was either smoke, fire or water damaged to the point of destruction.
My point here is that even UL Listed "made in the USA" electronics can go bad.

BTW - I got absolutely nothing from Ma Bell on that fire - not even an apology. Instead I saw a picture of the very transformer that burned me out of my home printed in every phone book for the next 10 or so years with warnings of it being a fire hazard.
Also - as a very young man at the time, I was hoping to buy my insurance with my next paycheck. I had none and lost almost everything...

Most of those adapters can get very hot. I've had some laptop adapters hot enough to burn skin.

I'm quite sure that almost all electronics are not going to be made in the USA, Canada, etc. Most of this stuff is made in china and assembled in either china or the country where they're trying to sell as COO. I work on 35K+ ovens with boards that are all made in china.

The real point I'm trying to make is that some 'cheaper' devices, even if they are UL listed, may not be AS safe as higher quality units. I do think the article lists a worst case scenario though.

The cheap ones are probably made in the same factory as the name brand ones. Probably the only difference is if the official Apple adapter fries your device, Apple will cover it. Maybe.

Maybe the same factory, but likely not. The insides are much different, per the above link, and based on my own person experience with a cheap charger catching fire.
