New roof, ants

I was up on my garage build project today, prepping the ridge to install the ridge vent. That means I had to cut a 1" wide slot down the length of the ridge. Surprise, when I peeled back the top most shingle to get at the OSB on the roof, I found a bunch of ants, aphids. Now, there are large mature trees overhanging the roof, but I was still surprised to see a multitude of small black ants. Anyone else experience something similar?

I have seen ants in a roof a couple of times. It could mean there is a water leak. Ants need moisture, dry out the roof, the ants will leave.

Mick is right, it is usually indicative of a moisture problem. Use a shop vac or leaf blower to dispel them and make your repair, once it’s dry it won’t be so inviting.

carpenter ants?

agree on finding addressing the moisture issue AND destroying the colony. a lot of off the shelf ant baits / traps do not address carpenter ants. most termite foams will do the trick.

Use a shop vac, no leaf blower. You want to kill them or get rid of them.

IMHO, The ants are seeking moisture, I don't like them in my house either. They are probably crawling from the tree onto your building.

Clear the branches away from the building, destroy the bridge they are using.
