New Sears 2009-2010 Tools Catalog

Anyone get theirs yet? Got mine today. Man, talk about an aggregator. Sears is trying to become a one stop shop for anything tools. Coxreels and Reelcraft stuff, too. Someone must be buying from them, but the prices ain't worth writing home about. Maybe it's the Sears service with a smile that is drawing people in?

They haven't showed up at my store yet but this is around the time of year the new ones come out; they should be in the stores soon!
I wonder if the new storage units will just continue to be rebadged Waterloo preexisting stuff or actually new designs? At this point, I am not convinced Sears designs anything but just meets with their OEMs to figure out what to sell in their market.

They seem to be spending big dough on the "look" as opposed to cramming as many tools in there for us to ponder.
Didn't have the same buzz. Or maybe me not wanting to spend any $ is the underlying deal.

My catalog arrived today. I agree, it does seem like they are putting a lot of money into advertising their tool inventory. Note price increases on a number of the items as well.

I have been looking for a 1956 hand tool catalog on ebay. One problem is the older catalogs were not always dated. I was able to find a listing on the net for what the seller said was 1956, but when I put a picture of the cover on the Craftsman Club message board it turned out to be a 1955.

Does anyone know what the cover looks like for a 1956?

It could be that there was no 1956 Hand Tool catalog; this might explain why you never see this catalog, except in error, on ebay.

I looked thru my History of Craftsman CD's and only found the Power Tool and General catalogs in 1956. David Maher (Mr Craftsman), who created these CD's told me that Sears did not publish the Hand Tools catalogs during "war years". Officially, Korea was not a war, just a "conflict" that dragged on for decades, but the 1956 HT catalog may have been a victom of this conflict, depending on how hot things were in 1956.

That's all I can tell you. You may want to contact David for official clarification on the 1956 HT catalog. I've got his email somewhere.

Just got mine too. I too am very curious as to why it's now being pushed more as a Sears catalog rather than a Craftsman one.

Officially, the war ended in 1953, but US troops remained there well into the 1980's. I had a few high school friends that were drafted in 1968 and 1969 that served in Korea, not Viet Nam. Some of these guys were wounded in Korea. None of this stuff was on the news, it was all about Viet Nam, but the Korean conflict was still going on...cold war style.

Now how exactly this translated into catalog publication at Sears is anybodies guess. All I know is that there is a clear pattern of suspending publication of the tool catalogs during periods of U.S. military action. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

There was never a treaty signed, only a cease-fire. So, hostilities could errupt again at any time. For that reason, there are still approx 35,000 US forces on the Korean penninsula.

The new line of their best boxes sure look like Snap-on boxes,looking at the drawers,trim and handles.They are priced way up there,too.I was wondering if there is a typo in the price of the wide-guy 75 inch unit ($8999.00) and the big 94 inch monster,which is the same 75 inch unit,only a side-cab unit built in,for the same ( $8999.00) price.
It doesn't look like they have any grip-latch feature anymore.They sure look nice,though!
The 24 inch deep side cab they sell costs $1399.00,so if they did make a 30 inch one,it would likely go for like $1700.00 I'd think.That's why I was wondering if the price was wrong,being that they are priced identical.
Anyone know who they have make these units,? I wonder how well they will sell being so close to the tool truck prices? It does say that the price includes freight and premium delivery service,though.

There are a lot of typographical errors in this catalog. Missing numbers, advertising 1/2" sockets as 1", and many others. Someone didn't read the copy very well this time.

The new boxes look friggin' sweet, but how good are they? I've become a bit spoiled with my Matco box, even if it is just a low-line 4 series. And the increased prices are really making me think twice about buying new from Sears.

Catalog arrived today. Some new good stuff in it. Those big boxes do look pretty nice but alot of $$$$$! Wonder if any of the local stores will carry any examples soon, I would think they would have to....who is going to fork over that kind of money and not see one in person first? I noticed the box I just got went up a couple hundred.

Waterloo makes them. I don't think they sell that well except for when they're on closeout. How many of the true Craftsman Professional or the older industrial models do you see out in shops? Most of the Craftsman users are looking for a decent tool with that lifetime warranty at a decent price. I think the lifetime warranty on the professional series boxes is gone as it's not mentioned in the new catalog. As for price, the new 37 inch bottom box alone sells for more than what the current 36 inch wide top, bottom, and side locker goes for together. The previous marketing strategy for the professional series boxes was that you could get them for about half of a truck brand set, that no longer applies. However, you may be able to get a deal on a display model or existing stock of the old style units.

Thanks for underscoring and expanding upon my point. Sorry about your first-hand experience; it's always tuff being away from your family.

The ongoing Korean conflict could be one of our the better kept secrets!

I picked a catalog up at the local sears. They had stacks of them. It's a nice colorful catalog featuring many brands besides Craftsman. However, what I dislike most about the new catalog is the absence of open stock sections. Yes, the company that made its name through mail order, doesn't list individual tools like sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, ratchet, or wrenches etc. in their latest catalog. They could have left out the workwear section and added the open stock sections. On the many pages of sets, there are little blurbs telling you to visit sears.com/shoptools for open stock items. No wonder Sears is having problems. I think their marketing is moving more towards sets and away from individual tools.

I got my catalog today and I'm impressed at what Sears now carry; looks like the round head quick release ratchet is gone (I'm glad I got a backup when they were still available)..

I guess I can understand opening the catalog up to more non-Sears/Craftsman branded stuff. It's been in the catalog to some extent for the last few years, and the stores sell other brands as well.

I'm rather annoyed at the "Workwear" section, and the open-stock stuff being listed as "online only".

Why are yellow toolboxes more expensive than non-yellow? Amusing to see them introduce new colors, then kick the price up for those new colors.
