New shop build 40x60 plus a canopy

Hey everyone,

I've gotten multiple ideas off of this site while in the planning stages of of my soon to start build.

My steel package should be dropped off middle of next month, looking forward to putting this thing together

I'm starting this to kind of notate the build, any comments I'm open to them as this is my first large build like this.

I'm doing most of the work myself, and being a GC on the stuff I can't do due to experience, won't due because I hate doing it or can't do due to time.

Including my budget....all I can say is have you priced concrete lately lol

There was a guy that offered lighting plans on here...I think he started free, but then went to a paid plan....anyone know who that was? I have some interesting shadows that I will need to contend with but only part of the time.

What are you going to do about a retaining wall? You're site looks a lot like mine did, carved out of the side of a hill. I've been putting off building the retaining wall and have to shovel dirt around from time to time.

So that’s what footings look like for no snow load. I’m jealous. I would be pouring twice that much concrete here in the mountains. If I may offer one suggestion. Shoot the slab at the anchor bolt locations and make sure they are all within 1/4” total elevation. Do not assume they are correct. If they are off you will chase the problem all the way to the roof. What kind of insulation are you using?

I've got a local guy that has set a few with me. He doesn't do it for a living, I was on the fence about doing it and had it not been right in the middle of my work season I think I would have. The parts are clearly marked no sunrises to be found. I know that some fitment will be required but looks pretty simple but time consuming.

I will be building a 2nd floor over a part of this myself as well as doing all the electrical basically doing as much as my time will allow.

I've attached a pic of his "steel setter" lol. Crazy but seems to work!

What are you going to do about a retaining wall? You're site looks a lot like mine did, carved out of the side of a hill. I've been putting off building the retaining wall and have to shovel dirt around from time to time.

As it stands I know I will need one at some point. I left the space on the back big enough for my tractor to help. I will either get it grassed in and see how it does with a small retaining wall, pour a wall, or most likely use the concrete guys premade 2000 lb retain wall large blocks that I can get for around $40.00 bucks or so and stack them up.

That's a gradual taper but then you can kinda see in this pic it is a 5 ftt sheer wall of basically sand. Hopefully it won't wash too bad until I get it under control.

Lol this was the only slab around here beside homes that had any footing added. We have always just poured a thickened slab by a couple inches and went on (past personal shops etc). As it stands this has a yard of concrete for each upright, 6 in of main slab and around 16 in total thickness with the slab and footer. More then enough for here lol.

How bad does yours have to be? Funny how it does a a full circle, I understand Alaska does many just like this one since it freezes so deep your not building past it so it is good to be able to move freely.

P.s I shot the bolt pads while they took a break with their laser. Seems to have been within a 1/16 to a 1/8. A few washers here and there while assembling to level and to think it will be good

Btw I bought that little scissor, at the price with new batteries I couldn't say no and I figured it would pull it's weight putting in conduit and air lines.

That big one is already having trouble. Getting a low motor speed error right before the diesel bogs down and dies.

I see there are new fuel filters and a high idle actuator installed. Either they did a major service and there is still air in the lines or they have had a problem and still haven't worked it out yet. Oh and the auto level doesn't work so it won't lift unless it is on the concrete which for a 4x4 lift kinda *****. Either way I guess they are coming back!!

Just like yours but all the footings would be three feet deep. We would also have a concrete and rebar tie beam between the main frames to keep them from spreading. No welded wire. Lots of rebar. If you are that close on elevation don’t bother with washers. They can cause stress cracks in the concrete from a concentrated load point. Found that out early in my erecting career and fortunately where it happened the owner wasn’t concerned.

My shop was finished Feb 2015, and I wasn't that worried about erosion, but of course 2015 turned out to be the year we've had the heaviest rain in recorded history (since 1890's). The side that needs the retaining wall is on the North side and very sandy so nothing grows very well. Luckily there's sandstone underneath. My plan is to build a retaining wall and gravel in between. I'm leaning toward concrete bag retaining wall.

My 2 biggest regrets are skylights on the roof and gutters. The skylights pour condensation in the mornings throughout half the year and they warp and crack easily. I've seen crows pecking at them and break them!! My walls are 16' so I thought I wouldn't have a problem with leaves in the gutters. I was very wrong, I've found all sorts of **** in my gutters and wonder how the hell it got up there. If I had to do it over again, I'd have a sidewalk all the way around the shop and delete the gutters. It would make it easier to mow around too.

I didn't because I'm not insulating it right now.

I've worked out of several shops that have never had a single piece of insulation in it. If and when I insulate the building I will be using some variety of spray type insulation which would be done after the walls and roof would be on. The type of work that I do isn't conducive to having a climate controlled shop as much as I hate to say it.

All spray type insulation(s) will void all warranties on metal building panels, unless you have a barrier between the panels and spray foam. My company builds steel buildings, and spray foam will rust the panels because of condensation.

I have in my contracts that any spray foam will void all warranties. There are some blanket insulation systems that can be installed after erection.

I was given my permit about 32 seconds after I handed back the application file it took her a bit to find a sharpie that wasn't dried out..

I thought it was rather lengthy personally the paperwork took almost twenty minutes to fill out.

Mine is Commercial it tooks months for the civil engineering and that plan is currently under review at the county for almost 2 months now. They will more than likely reject my civil drawing and make me change some things as well. I'm building a 40x80. Mind if I ask what your building, concrete and erection costs were?

I paid 8 grand to have it put up with a few days of my own labor but not much really. The building was 29-30 with the two roll up doors and the over hang. I paid out the **** for the concrete slab but a good bit was prep we had to move a lot of dirt. It was 16000.

Could you believe I've got quotes of over 100k for erection? Your concrete price sounds ok compared to here I've got quoted 15 to 30k.
