New shop build

Well I figured I should update this thread as I finally got all the shingles up. I still have to trim the rake edges and install the ridge vent and ridge shingles. I found out I can't get my first rough in inspection done until I get the electrical done. So once I tidy up the roof I can move inside and start running wiring. I will probably Go ahead and by and install the windows and doors as well. I will have to shim them out by 5/8" as I will be using T1-11 siding and I want the windows to end up flush with the surrounding siding. Then trim as usual.

I still have a long way to go but it is finally starting to feel like I am getting close.

Here is what it looks like now. (actually the roof pic is old as both sides are shingled now.)

About time for an update I guess. I have been worried about all the electrical stuff as that is not really my specialty but with lots of advice from folks here on garage journal I think I am getting close. I dug a trench from the corner of the house to the corner of the garage and laid my feeder cable in there and ran it in conduit up the side of the wall.





Then I got all the wiring run inside the shop down to the new panel


I still have to install all the outlets and lights and tie in everything in the panel on both ends but I'm getting close. It will be nice when I can walk in and flip a switch and turn on all the lights instead of plugging in an extension cord.



So far so good....should be able to call for first rough in inspection this week...wish me luck!

I got about 90% of the electrical finished up yesterday. I'm gonna hang the rest of the lights today and wire up the last two switches for the exterior lights and then it will be finished for now. Next week I'm going to work on building the bi-fold garage door so I can secure the whole thing. After that I need to finish the exterior siding and then interior wall covering. I'm thinking about using thin OSB as it will make the walls stronger and easier to mount shelves etc. My wife saw one of the home improvement shows where they sanded and clear coated OSB and she loves the look. My only concern is how much brighter it would look if we just painted it white instead. I guess we will see tonight after I get all the lights up. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and I still don't hear train horns so I feel pretty good about it all. I'll post more pictures tonight.

most impressive part is that you put those LVL's up alone. Me and two other ppl lifted a 27' double lvl up and it almost killed me.

Are you going to insulate the walls? You may want to check out the high abuse wall board, that stuff takes a beating but finishes just like normal drywall. There is a supply place in Huntsville called Marjam that either carries or can get the high abuse stuff. It is just as tough if not more so than OSB.

Yeah I did mine one at a time and even that was brutal. It's nice to say I did it all by myself but man it is a lot of work.

Grcthird, I will have to look into that high abuse stuff. Any idea on the cost? I haven't heard of the place you mentioned but I will look them up.

Here is the latest picture. All the lights are up and everything is wired and complete. It is pretty bright as is but I have enough outlets and space to put up twice as many lights if I should ever need it.

Well, it has been awhile but I made some more progress. I got both the garage doors built and hung. Unfortunately, Mother nature bent one of them up pretty bad the other day when a tornado went by about a mile away. I am very happy with the look but they are just a bit on the flimsy side. I will have to take them apart and rework some stuff to get them sturdy enough. But at least for now I have doors to keep the dogs out and the tools in.

Now I need to put up the soffit and gutters and interior wall covering.

I need to rent a bobcat or something to do some other yard work. When I do I am going to level out the driveway area and eventually do black top out to the front of the house. A concrete drive that length would be out of the question cost wise so blacktop is probably my best option. That will be down the road a bit though.
