Hi Everyone,
I've been lurking here quite a while and finally am building myself a new shop. In our old house I renovated the detached garage and learned quite a few things and with this new move decided I wanted to do it right. So here we go.

Build is a detached shop 18x24. Positioned to block the stuff in the neighbours back yard and not block our view to the woods. Slab has been poured with radiant floor tubing installed, electrical run to shop and as of today hopefully 3 walls built. It will have a 10' porch on the front and be mostly for wood work and motorcycle puttering...Ceiling height will be 8'6" with some room for misc storage in the attic.

Let's have some fun and hope you like!

 Sounds like my build. I wanted the addition long enough to block the view of the front of the neighbors house, and a privacy fence will be going out back to block their backyard. Looks like you build is coming along nicely, and looking forward to seeing it all of the way through.

BTW....Welcome to Garage Journal. About the only site that the members ban together to help spend the other members money on their garage. :lol_hitti

Seriously though, you will find that this is one of the best groups on the 'net that there is, and we all work to help others out. And if you would, could you put your state into your profile? A lot of times it really helps to answer questions without everyone asking where you live, over and over. No city necessary unless you want to post that also, but just a state in the U.S.of A, or a country if you are outside of America, really helps. Thank you in advance.

Re: New shop build AKA THE SHOP

Hello everyone! Been a few weeks but we have some progress now. I actually had the week off last week so helped get most of the hardee board up on the exterior of the shop. We ended up going with the stock colour (thankfully for my pocketbook!!) and doing the soffit, fascia and evestrough in black. As you can see my yard is pretty demo'd so I will have to do some landscaping as well. I've been scoping out lots of ideas here so next will be the finishing of the deck and the porch ceiling in T&G pine and then on to the interior...

Long weekend update. Outside is all done! Except for some staining and little things. Deck under the porch will have to wait till next spring as the budget will now have to go to the interior...
Got my table saw back and set up. It was rusty on the top but sanded and waxed and good as new now. Will have to start insulating and finishing but can still start some of the projects for the wife and keep her happy! :)

Well, it's been awhile but the shop is getting there...
Finished putting up the OSB and painting, all the lights are hung. Some cabinets have been moved and trying to finish up the bench. Still on the hunt for a jointer and planer and of course the personalization will continue. Your shops are a huge inspiration to me...

Grissom & LXCam - thanks! Porch will be nice in the summer especially when I add the deck and landscaper gets the patio done. Many cigars will be enjoyed!

vekster - Always surprises me that you run into people who are close...Yes, the hot water heater runs on propane and runs warm water through the floor. Currently have it set at 10 C and it's nice. Keeps everything very dry and if my feet are warm I stay warm.

Brian80 - No idea where the cabinets came from. My boss had them in storage at work and then redid his garage and didn't use them so he gave them to me. They look like a brand we sell in a store here called "Canadian Tire".

So it's been a while but I've been very busy and doing lots of work both for my profession and to make my wife happy! To first update here are some pics of how the shop progressed but most of it was outside. I'll get some interior pics this weekend...

One project I did finish up was the wifes walk in closet. Ended up building all the cabinets etc. and a small coffered ceiling with crown moulding. Cabinets were made of MDF and face frame out of rough sawn maple which I milled down. Here's a few pics of that.

Modoc - here is a pic of the set up for my in floor heating. It's been on for two winters now and works fantastic. I would highly recomend this if in my cold climate...I currently have it set to 13C and work in a tshirt. Currently it's been -10 to -20 out...
