Been planning for about a year trying to finish up other projects, and get stuff in order on the new (to us) house. Been without a proper shop for 3 1/2 years now. Building is a metal 40X50X16, insulated, three roll up doors, one walk door, 200 amp service, full bath, and will end up with an upstairs office in the corner above the bath.

Where it begins..

Got the concrete guys out of the way and spent labor day weekend building the ramp and laying the road base down for the drive.

Go 8" of rain (been a long time since we have had any rain) last week and the road base held up great! I will top the road with screenings once the construction is completed.

Steel will be here on Friday 9/18/09 so I am getting stoked!

I am glad I am not putting it together, I am hoping that it will be completed fairly quickly once the steel gets here.

I will try to get pics posted this weekend!

Nice start to a neat garage. Where in Texas are you? We had rain in Dripping Springs last week also. First rain in months. Filled up the rain collection tank so we are good for the next four months. I just finished my build (My Texas Dream Garage). Are you putting in insulation? Would be well worth the money. Looking forward to watching the build. Congrats.

Yep on a big rock in Wimberley.

You can see the size of our limestone boulders stacked to hold the sid of the ramp in place.

Nighttrain, just down the road between Wimberley and Driftwood,
Yeah the rain was nice! The shop will have at least 5k gals in collection when I am done (back up for the well and use in the shop). Yes it will be insulated, and putting at least one fan in the back wall for ventilation. I am just ready for the guys to get it up then I can wire, plumb, build, play....

Steevo, it looked big the first day, I think it gets smaller everyday!
I really wanted 40'X60' but I just could not get it in where I wanted it. I've got 5 acres but I really like the fact that my house, bar, patio and shop are hidden for the most part from the street by trees. I did not want to open up any other areas of the property.

Who did you go with for the building? I see the bolts in the pad, is it a bolt together frame? Not sure what type of lights you plan on using but on the Austin Craigslist there is a guy selling some high bay lights for $100 each. Pretty nice lights. I almost went with those but am considering the CFL or the 8' T-10. Still in planning. My shop is very similar to yours with 16' ceiling. Nice that Hayes County does not squawk too much about building codes.

Im just east of Dripping Srpings off 290. Looking foward to your build. I saw your pictures of your old garage and the bar area. Real nice.

It is a Premier Steel Building.

Metal will be here tomorrow, doors came in today!

They beat Muellers original price by $10K for the same specs.
It will have a 30'X40' bay on the right side with 2 10X12 doors, then a 20'X40' bay with a 10X8 door on the left side.

I will post progress pics as we go along hoping they will have it erected within a week and a half.
I have not decided on how it will be lit... a portion of the shop will have a 2nd story office so I still need to lay everything out. I have not been impressed with the High bays I may look into the CFLs a bit more. I have a lot of shop equipment stored at my "work shop" in Buda I need to move and get locations lined out before I run the electric.

I had to have a HOA approval on the building, but there are several steel buildings in the neighborhood so it was not a major issue. I

Wow. There's no changing your mind about a slab of concrete like that. It seems like the earth's rotation should get a little bit of a wobble from it.

Montessaj I will post pics as soon as they start erecting the building rain has delayed the start till Monday (we have been in a drought for ever and a day) If I had known as soon as I want to put a building up we would get this much rain I would have taken up a collection from my neighbors. Good news is all the parts are here!

Jack/Rando the slab does look a little thick thanks to the rock I live on (no that is not bad grammer I really do live on one big rock) In this part of Texas you don't dig footers and beams you build them up. High side is 44" low side is 10" above grade, we dug down as far as we could with out a hammer. Slab is 6" took 60 yards of 3500 PSI concrete.

You have to watch the guys with the vibrators close while they are pouring, too much ******** and a form that big will blow out! We had my contractors hoe and my compact excavator holding in a form when the ******** guy got a little happy.

Trust me I freaked when I saw the quotes on the slab work, it is $2 a ft cheaper in North TX where I grew up. The nice thing about this rock I live on is stuff does not tend to move. My house has stained concrete floors and I can count the small cracks on one hand.

All in all I am very happy with the build, it took 4 guys 6 days from the time the first iron was hung until the doors were shut, plus one day of clean up. I was glad I got the drive in before they started hanging iron.

I was out of town when the last sheets went up and the doors were hung. There are some great features about the building, haven't found any negatives. It is a daunting task to try and decide where everything is going. The electrician is due in this week to replace the house meter and run the wire to the panel in the shop. I have moved toolboxes, a couple of welding tables, my current project and some shelves in as of right now. I will get pictures as we move along.

Thanks
Johnboy
