Hi All, finally getting around to my garage build, 35’x32’, 4’ block frost wall is in and back filled, framing and trusses should be done before Christmas! Plan is for radiant floor heating and a four post hoist. Questions, how thick does the concrete need to be (hobby garage), I’ve seen discussions around 4” and 6”, is 4” enough for the hoist with two cars? Finishing, do I need to wait before applying a coating to the floor, what coating/finish do you like that works well around car fluids? Any guidance much appreciated, I’m sure I’ll have more questions!

Here is a whole page from BendPak about what their lifts require for the floor...

I've been shopping and am about 75% of the way done with a new garage (and attached house)... A number of the lift companies have their requirements on their web page...you just have to look.

I'd go 6 inch for future versatility. Minimal delta in cost. Make sure to keep track of the pex tubing in the slab so you don't drill into it for anchors. Usually wait 30 days for coatings.

What's under the slab is at least as important as the concrete thickness & much cheaper to install.

On the coating, I'm happy with my color hardener & clear coat. Coating horror stories scared me into looking for alternatives. Only brake fluid has damaged the clear coat, but I'm due for a clear coat refresher.

Thickness under the lift will entirely depend on manufacturer's specs. Either figure out lift you want and what they recommend or find the thickest recommended and go atleast that thick to err on the safe side.

Wait a minimum of 29 days before applying a coating. For "working" shops/garages checkout our Wolverine Coatings' two layer (primer and body coat) ceramic CFLC System!
